Engineering Maintenance Leadership Opportunity at Sasol

Purpose of the Role
The Foreman is responsible for overseeing engineering maintenance processes within the appointed area of responsibility. The role enables various teams to achieve production targets in line with QCDSM principles (Quality, Cost, Delivery, Safety, and Morale).
This position requires strong leadership capability, technical expertise, and the ability to manage engineering governance, safety compliance, and cost control while ensuring equipment availability and reliability.
Key Responsibilities
The Foreman will manage and execute engineering and maintenance strategies and overhaul plans on a daily basis to ensure departmental KPIs are achieved. This includes determining when equipment should be replaced or repaired to maintain operational efficiency.
Maintenance cost versus return on time (R/t) must be managed within the appointed area, including oversight of the maintenance budget.
Equipment availability must be ensured through effective management of downtime, shifts, Mean Time to Failure (MTTF), and Mean Time to Repair (MTTR), including infrastructure and inspection equipment.
The Foreman ensures adherence to the maintenance programme and implements operational projects in alignment with engineering compliance standards.
Development and implementation of engineering Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) within the appointed area of responsibility is required, alongside strict adherence to engineering principles and legislation.
Compliance with engineering governance bodies and standardisation committees is essential. The role includes SOP and Code of Practice (COP) implementation and adherence.
The Foreman will assess the economic and engineering viability of business cases (excluding major engineering projects) and provide inspection expertise and coaching.
Condition monitoring programmes must be carried out and adhered to according to schedules. Failure trend analysis and root cause elimination must be conducted to improve reliability.
Execution of predictive maintenance recommendations, including backlog management, is required.
The role supports production departments in achieving targets by coordinating planning within the appointed area of responsibility and controlling costs to ensure production volumes remain within budget.
Safety, SHE and Performance Management
The Foreman must ensure best-in-class safety performance and continuous improvement of key safety metrics to maintain required RCR.
Compliance with SHE targets is mandatory, including addressing major findings and outstanding actions. The objective is zero harm, zero fatalities, and improved Lost Workday Case Rate (LWDCR).
The role includes ensuring adherence to condition monitoring programmes and conducting inspections to maintain plant sustainability.
People Management and Leadership
The Foreman is responsible for recruitment, training, coaching, and career development within the team.
Vacancy rates must be managed against staff establishment, including absences due to TSD, PSD, AWOP, and succession planning for critical positions.
The role includes managing team performance indicators such as turnover rate, absenteeism, employee engagement and enablement scores, productivity metrics, monthly bonus targets, and planned task observations.
Leadership responsibilities include building talent, developing self and others, fostering collaboration, driving innovation, and delivering excellence.
Minimum Qualifications
National Senior Certificate or N3 with Mathematics, Physical Science, and English is required.
An Electro Mechanic Trade Certificate is required.
A Flameproof Certificate is required.
A Gas Testing Certificate is required.
A valid Driver’s Licence is required.
Experience Requirements
A minimum of 6 or more years of relevant working experience in an engineering or maintenance environment is required.
Required Skills and Competencies
Technical competencies include action planning, engineering technology, engineering design, engineering development, and understanding of SHE policies, procedures, and standards.
Leadership competencies include commercial agility, innovation, customer centricity, collaboration, inspirational leadership, talent development, partnership building, and delivery excellence.
Strong engineering governance knowledge and the ability to manage compliance requirements are essential.
