Role Summary

The Food Service Assistant plays a vital role in the daily operations of our catering units. You will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including assisting with meal preparation, setting up serving lines with entrees and salads, and ensuring that all dining areas remain clean and orderly. This role requires a proactive individual who can balance the technical requirements of food safety with the interpersonal skills needed to provide a world-class customer experience.

Key Job Responsibilities

1. Food Service & Line Management

  • Service Readiness: Keep the serving line well-stocked with food items, including salads, entrees, and beverages, to ensure a smooth flow during meal times.

  • Leftover Control: Safely store and record all food leftovers in accordance with food safety protocols to minimize waste and ensure quality.

  • Stock Management: Participate in stock counts and ensure that inventory in your designated area is accurately handed over to the incoming shift.

2. Hygiene, Safety & Sanitation

  • Regulatory Compliance: Adhere strictly to Company and Statutory regulations regarding cleanliness and hygiene in every task undertaken.

  • Cleaning Duties: Maintain the kitchen, canteen tables, and all service areas in a clean and orderly state, ensuring a pleasant environment for our clients.

  • Personal Standards: Maintain exceptional personal hygiene standards, ensuring you are always fit for food handling (free from skin allergies to foods or detergents).

3. Customer Excellence & Team Support

  • Service with a Smile: Deliver high-level customer service, ensuring that customer expectations are met or exceeded within the provisions of the contract.

  • Complaint Resolution: Report and, where possible, take immediate action to resolve customer complaints or escalate compliments to management.

  • Teamwork: Work collaboratively as part of a team and assist in training new employees as required.

  • Versatility: Carry out any reasonable requests by management, which may include duties outside your primary scope of responsibility during peak operational periods.

Minimum Requirements

Education & Qualifications

  • Minimum Education: Must have completed Grade 12 / Matric.

  • Experience: 1–2 years of experience in a similar food service or hospitality role.

Skills and Competencies

  • Interpersonal Skills: Must be a motivated individual who is customer-service oriented and passionate about “service with a smile.”

  • Operational Skills: Good hand-eye coordination with the ability to work quickly and safely in a high-pressure environment.

  • Attributes: Honest, trustworthy, reliable, and detail-oriented.

  • Work Style: Must enjoy practical, methodical work and be a committed team player.

  • Flexibility: Must be willing and able to work shifts as required by the operational schedule in Roodepoort.
