What Does a Food Service Aid Do?

Food Service Aids are essential to the daily operations of military catering and nutrition at the Joint Support Base Garrison. In this role, you will be responsible for preparing meals, maintaining kitchen hygiene, and supporting food logistics for military personnel — including during field exercises.

This is a hands-on, physical role that requires reliability, good hygiene practices, and the ability to work as part of a team in a structured military environment.


Key Responsibilities of a Food Service Aid

Meal & Food Preparation

  • Prepare daily meals, snacks, salads, and drinks for each meal service.
  • Make garnishes for meals and snacks to meet presentation standards.
  • Assist with the dishing up of food at each scheduled mealtime.
  • Support food preparation and catering during field exercises and related military activities.

Rations & Supply Management

  • Assist with the receiving of food rations and verify quantities on delivery.
  • Pack and store supplies received correctly in designated food storage areas.
  • Ensure correct rotation and storage of food items at all times.
  • Report any discrepancies, shortages, or damaged supplies to the supervisor immediately.

Kitchen & Facility Hygiene

  • Keep the kitchen, dining hall, and food storage areas clean, tidy, and organised at all times.
  • Remove kitchen waste regularly and dispose of it in accordance with hygiene protocols.
  • Operate cleaning machines and equipment correctly and safely.
  • Apply hygiene and safety measures consistently throughout the work environment.

Health & Safety Compliance

  • Adhere to all health and safety regulations applicable to food service environments.
  • Apply food safety and hygiene best practices during all stages of food preparation and storage.
  • Report any safety hazards or incidents to the supervisor immediately.
  • Participate in safety procedures and relevant training as required.

Teamwork & Communication

  • Communicate effectively in English with supervisors and team members.
  • Work collaboratively with the catering team across all shifts.
  • Maintain good interpersonal relations with colleagues and military personnel.
  • Demonstrate punctuality, integrity, and endurance in all duties.

Minimum Requirements – Food Service Aid
