Fleet Operations and Driver Supervision Role in the Consumer Division

Astral – Goldi Consumer is seeking to appoint a high calibre Fleet Controller for its operations in Standerton, Mpumalanga. This is a permanent position within the Consumer business unit, responsible for handling key administrative functions while supervising and controlling driver activities to ensure efficient and safe fleet operations.

The Fleet Controller plays a vital operational role in coordinating fleet availability, monitoring driver performance, maintaining compliance with safety standards, and ensuring that delivery plans are effectively executed in line with customer requirements. This position requires strong organisational ability, attention to detail, and the capacity to work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced logistics environment.

About the Role

The Fleet Controller is responsible for overseeing daily fleet activities, ensuring that trucks, drivers, and delivery plans are properly coordinated to meet operational and customer expectations. The role combines administrative duties with hands-on operational control to maintain smooth transportation processes.

The successful candidate must demonstrate strong initiative, reliability, and assertiveness, as well as the ability to monitor fleet performance using tracking systems such as Mix Telematics. The role requires shift work and demands a proactive approach to managing safety, compliance, and driver performance.

Fleet Planning and Delivery Coordination

The Fleet Controller is responsible for determining fleet and driver availability to ensure that delivery requirements are met efficiently.

Delivery plans must be compiled and implemented effectively according to operational schedules and customer demands.

The effectiveness of delivery plans must be evaluated continuously to ensure alignment with customer requirements and service standards.

Operational issues must be communicated promptly to customers to maintain service transparency and customer satisfaction.

Driver Supervision and Performance Monitoring

The Fleet Controller conducts driver briefings and debriefings to ensure clear communication of operational expectations.

Driver working hours and fuel consumption must be calculated and monitored to ensure efficiency and compliance.

Driver overtime must be monitored and managed appropriately.

Driver fatigue must be monitored carefully, with post-debrief checks completed and proper sign-off procedures followed.

Breathalyzer tests must be conducted, and driver licences as well as PDPs must be verified to ensure full compliance with legal requirements.

Support must be provided to drivers when challenges arise, ensuring smooth operational flow and safety adherence.

Fleet Monitoring and Compliance

Fleet and driver activity must be monitored using Mix Telematics to ensure route compliance, operational efficiency, and safety standards.

The Fleet Controller oversees maintenance of tyres, trailers, and trucks to ensure operational readiness.

All vehicles must be maintained in a roadworthy condition, and required certificates must be correctly displayed on vehicles at all times.

Safety processes and registers must be managed effectively, including monitoring PPE compliance to ensure adherence to safety standards.

The role requires strict attention to safety protocols and operational compliance to protect both company assets and employees.

Administrative Responsibilities

The Fleet Controller is responsible for handling general administrative tasks related to fleet operations.

Accurate data capturing is required to maintain reliable operational records.

Administrative accuracy supports reporting, compliance verification, and performance monitoring across the fleet.

Customer complaints must be managed professionally, ensuring that service concerns are addressed promptly and appropriately.

Minimum Requirements

Valid driver’s licence is required.

Matric (Grade 12) is required.

Previous administration experience in a similar environment is essential.

Computer literacy is required.

Experience with data capturing is required.
