Position Overview
RCL Foods is seeking a skilled Fitter and Turner to join the Milling Division in Pretoria West, Gauteng. This role is critical in maintaining machinery and equipment to ensure smooth, uninterrupted operations. The successful candidate will perform routine preventive maintenance, diagnose mechanical faults, and manufacture or repair spare parts as required.
The ideal candidate will have strong technical skills, practical engineering knowledge, and the ability to work independently as well as mentor junior staff and apprentices. This position reports to the Engineering Supervisor and requires adherence to health, safety, and food safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
Routine Maintenance and Mechanical Repairs
-
Perform preventive maintenance to ensure machinery operates efficiently and physical integrity is maintained.

Inspect drives, motors, belts, bearings, and filters; replace or repair components as required.

Diagnose mechanical problems and implement effective solutions to prevent downtime.

Clean, lubricate, and maintain shafts, gears, bearings, and other machinery parts.

Assemble, install, and repair pipe systems, machinery, and equipment including steam and waterlines.

Record maintenance and repair work accurately for reporting and audit purposes.
Operational Compliance
-
Ensure compliance with Health and Safety requirements in all maintenance activities.

Adhere to Food Safety standards, with prior FMCG experience considered advantageous.

Maintain orderly documentation of maintenance schedules, checklists, and service records.
Technical Fabrication and Machine Work

Manufacture spare parts using lathe and milling machines.
-
Apply welding and cutting skills for component fabrication and repairs.
-
Monitor and analyze machinery performance to anticipate maintenance requirements.
Team Leadership and Mentorship

Direct and train workers or apprentices in installation, maintenance, and mechanical repairs.

Support skills development and knowledge transfer to junior staff within the department.

Communicate effectively with engineering colleagues, supervisors, and production teams.
Shift and On-Call Responsibilities

Work shifts as required and be available for on-call standby duties to address urgent breakdowns.

Prioritize workload to ensure critical machinery remains operational and downtime is minimized.
Minimum Requirements

N3 Mechanical Engineering Qualification plus certified Fitter and Turner.

Knowledge of welding, cutting, compressors, conveyor belts, and milling machinery.

Experience in manufacturing spare parts using lathe and milling machines.

Ability to communicate effectively at all levels.

Strong planning, systematic working approach, and ability to prioritize tasks.

Skills in report writing and analysis.

Experience mentoring apprentices or junior mechanical staff.

Availability to work shifts and respond to call-outs when required.
