Frequently Asked Questions – First Officer Jobs South Africa 2026
What is the difference between this FirstOfficer_04 round and the previous FlySafair First Officer post? FlySafair has published two separate First Officer recruitment rounds on this site. The previous round (5 positions) and this FirstOfficer_04 round (10 positions) are distinct recruitment campaigns — each with their own job reference number. Candidates who applied in the earlier round should submit a fresh application under reference FirstOfficer_04 to be considered for these 10 additional positions. Applying to the correct reference number is critical for accurate candidate tracking in FlySafair’s recruitment system.
What is SACAA Doc 8186 and why must First Officers know it? ICAO Doc 8186 — the Operations Manual Part IV — is the ICAO standard for airline operator certification and operations. It defines the regulatory framework for airline operations documentation, crew training requirements, minimum equipment lists, and operational specifications. SACAA applies Doc 8186 in the context of South African Air Operator Certificates (AOCs). First Officers must have a sound working knowledge of Doc 8186 to understand the regulatory basis for FlySafair’s Operations Manual content and to ensure full regulatory compliance in daily flight operations.
What is IQSMS and when does a First Officer use it? IQSMS (Incident and Quality Safety Management System) is the aviation safety reporting platform used by South African airlines and aviation organisations to report safety occurrences, incidents, and near-misses. First Officers are required to submit IQSMS reports after any flight event that meets the reporting threshold — including technical defects, abnormal procedures, near-misses, or safety hazards observed during operations. Accurate and timely IQSMS reporting is a fundamental safety culture obligation for all FlySafair flight crew.
Can non-type-rated candidates apply for this round? Yes — the requirements explicitly state that Non-Type Rated candidates with a minimum of 1 500 hours (including 500 hours Multi-Turbine) are eligible. FlySafair’s training bond arrangement facilitates Boeing 737 type rating training for selected non-type-rated candidates — making this round accessible to experienced SACAA CPL holders who have not yet obtained a jet type rating. Candidates with an existing Boeing type rating have an additional advantage but are not the exclusive target.
