Frequently Asked Questions – Facilities Maintenance Assistant Jobs Johannesburg
What is the difference between the Facilities Maintenance Assistant and the Facilities Maintenance Operator at FlySafair? Both are permanent FlySafair Head Office maintenance posts closing on 24 March 2026 — and both report to the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor. The key differences are experience level and independence of work. The Facilities Maintenance Operator (3 years experience) performs maintenance tasks independently, carries out adjustments and component replacements, records maintenance work, and provides guidance to assistants. The Facilities Maintenance Assistant (1 year experience) supports the Operator and other maintenance personnel — carrying tools, preparing work areas, performing manual labour, and operating basic hand tools under supervision. The Assistant role is the natural career entry point that leads to the Operator role over time.
Does “under supervision” mean I cannot work independently at all? “Under supervision” applies specifically to the operation of hand tools and basic equipment — reflecting that the Maintenance Assistant’s level of experience requires guidance when using tools until competency is established. For manual labour tasks, site preparation, cleaning, and material handling, the Maintenance Assistant is expected to work independently and take initiative. As experience builds, supervised tasks progressively become independent competencies.
Is plumbing knowledge strictly required or just helpful? Plumbing knowledge is listed as a requirement for the Maintenance Assistant — the same as for the Operator. In a corporate Head Office environment, basic plumbing awareness is practical and regularly needed: blocked drains, leaking taps, geyser faults, and sanitary fitting issues are common maintenance call-outs. The Maintenance Assistant is expected to assist with these tasks alongside the Operator — making working plumbing knowledge a genuine daily function rather than an optional extra.
Can I apply for both the Maintenance Assistant and the Maintenance Operator roles at FlySafair simultaneously? Yes — both posts share the same Head Office location and closing date (24 March 2026). Candidates with 3 years of experience who meet the Operator requirements may apply for both. Candidates with 1 year of experience should focus their application on the Assistant post, as they do not yet meet the Operator’s minimum experience requirement. Each application must be submitted separately through the FlySafair careers portal under the correct job reference.
