Purpose of the Role
The Driver Salesman is responsible for driving the delivery truck over established routes or within an assigned territory, delivering products efficiently, and actively selling RCL Foods products to customers along the route. The role combines professional driving, customer-facing sales, cash management, stock control, and delivery administration — making it one of the most varied and commercially impactful roles in the RCL Foods distribution network.
Successful candidates must be willing to work shifts, weekends (including Sundays), overtime, and public holidays as required by operational needs.
Key Responsibilities – Driver Salesman
Product Delivery & Route Management
- Ensure the prompt, safe, and efficient transport and delivery of RCL Foods products along established routes or within the assigned territory.
- Adhere to all delivery procedures, route schedules, and customer delivery windows consistently.
- Ensure the efficient operation of the assigned delivery vehicle — conducting pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and reporting any defects immediately.
- Ensure minimum product losses are incurred through careful, respectful handling of all goods during loading, transit, and off-loading.
Route Sales
- Actively sell RCL Foods products to potential and existing customers along the assigned delivery route.
- Identify opportunities to increase order sizes, introduce new products, and grow the customer base within the territory.
- Represent RCL Foods professionally in all customer interactions — building trust, loyalty, and long-term trading relationships.
- Communicate product availability, promotions, and pricing accurately and persuasively to customers on the route.
Cash Management & Van Sheet Balancing
- Manage all cash collected from customers accurately and securely throughout the route.
- Balance the van sheet at the end of every route, ensuring all deliveries, sales, returns, and cash collections reconcile completely and correctly.
- Adhere to RCL Foods’ cash management policies and procedures at all times, maintaining zero tolerance for cash discrepancies.
Documentation & Administration
- Ensure all delivery documentation — including invoices, delivery notes, and returns documentation — is maintained accurately and completely for every stop on the route.
- Ensure all paperwork is completed, signed, and submitted in line with RCL Foods’ delivery and administration procedures.
Stock Returns & Crate Collection
- Collect crates and stock returns from customers efficiently and accurately on every route.
- Ensure effective and compliant processing of all stock returns in line with RCL Foods’ returns procedures.
- Maintain strict control of the security of all goods collected, transported, and delivered throughout every shift.
Minimum Requirements – Driver Salesman
Educational Qualifications
- Grade 12 (Matric) — required
- A formal qualification in sales, logistics, or a related field is an added advantage
Licence & Permit Requirements
- Valid Code 10 Driver’s Licence — essential
- Valid Professional Driving Permit (PDP) — essential
- Clean or near-clean driving record strongly preferred
Work Experience
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in an FMCG environment — essential
- Prior experience as a Driver Salesman, route sales driver, or delivery driver in FMCG is strongly preferred
