Purpose of the Role
The Courier is responsible for the safe and efficient transport of medical specimens, laboratory reports, and parcels — whether by vehicle or motorbike — between Ampath’s laboratories and the communities, clinicians, and healthcare facilities it serves across the Western Cape. Key Responsibilities – Courier
Medical Specimen & Report Transport
- Safely and efficiently collect and deliver medical specimens, laboratory reports, and parcels across assigned Cape Town routes — following all Ampath collection and delivery protocols.
- Ensure the integrity of all medical specimens throughout transport — maintaining correct handling, temperature awareness, and packaging standards at all times to preserve the validity of diagnostic samples.
- Deliver laboratory results and reports to the correct clinicians, practices, hospitals, and clients promptly and accurately — ensuring that no delivery is late, misdirected, or incomplete.
Route Navigation & Punctuality
- Navigate assigned routes efficiently and responsibly — planning for traffic conditions, optimising delivery sequences, and maintaining punctuality across all collection and delivery commitments.
- Manage daily delivery schedules independently and proactively — adapting to route changes, urgent collections, and additional instructions from the dispatch team.
Client Relationship & Professional Representation

Specimen Handling & Care
- Handle all specimens, reports, and parcels with meticulous care and attention — recognising that each delivery represents a patient awaiting a diagnostic result that could directly affect their healthcare journey.
- Report any specimen integrity concerns, delivery complications, or client feedback to the relevant Ampath team member promptly.
Vehicle Maintenance & Safety
- Operate Ampath’s vehicle or motorbike safely, responsibly, and in full compliance with South African road traffic legislation at all times.
- Report any vehicle defects, maintenance requirements, or road incidents to the relevant supervisor immediately.
- Maintain the cleanliness and roadworthiness of the assigned vehicle throughout the working week.
