Operations & Manufacturing Internship – Process Improvement and Production Efficiency
RCL Foods is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Continuous Improvement Intern (FTC) to join the Speciality division based in Spartan, Gauteng. The Continuous Improvement Intern will assist in analysing and improving production processes, with a specific focus on resource usage, production efficiency, and material usage variance. This role is suited to individuals pursuing or recently completing qualifications in Industrial Engineering, Operations Management, Chemical Engineering, or related fields.
The internship provides exposure to manufacturing process improvement initiatives and offers hands-on experience in applying Lean principles and structured problem-solving methodologies within a real production environment.
Purpose of the Role
The purpose of the Continuous Improvement Intern FTC role is to support continuous improvement initiatives by analysing operational data and identifying opportunities to optimise production performance.
The intern will work on projects that evaluate resource usage in relation to production efficiency. The role includes analysing material usage variances and supporting initiatives aimed at reducing waste and improving operational output.
This position contributes to improving manufacturing efficiency and supporting data-driven decision-making processes within the Speciality-Spartan operations environment.
Key Responsibilities
The intern will utilise PowerBI (preferred) or Excel to create detailed reports comparing resource usage to production efficiency. These reports must provide clear insights into trends, patterns, and performance metrics that support operational decision-making.
Material usage variance analysis is a core responsibility. The intern will analyse material usage data to identify deviations and recommend improvements aimed at reducing waste and optimising resource utilisation.
Time and motion studies will be conducted to evaluate the efficiency of production processes. These studies will support the identification of bottlenecks and inefficiencies within manufacturing operations.
The intern will apply Lean principles and the DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve, Control) methodology to support structured continuous improvement initiatives.
Strong analytical capability is required to interpret operational data accurately and provide actionable insights that support performance improvement.
Clear communication and presentation of findings to relevant stakeholders will form part of the responsibilities, ensuring that recommendations are understood and considered within operational planning.
This internship focuses on practical exposure to continuous improvement methodologies within a manufacturing setting and supports operational excellence initiatives.
Minimum Requirements
Proficiency in PowerBI (preferred) or Excel for data analysis and reporting
Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data and provide actionable insights (will be tested)
Knowledge of Lean principles and DMAIC methodology (will be tested)
Excellent communication and presentation skills
Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Industrial Engineering, Operations Management, Chemical Engineering, or related field
Previous experience, coursework, or projects in continuous improvement or process optimisation will be advantageous
