FMCG Driver Salesman Role – Baking Business Unit Supply Chain

RCL Foods is recruiting for a driven, highly energized and customer-focused Code 10 Driver Salesman within the baking business unit. This permanent FMCG driver position is based in Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal, and forms part of the company’s Supply Chain function.

The successful candidate will be responsible for performing tasks associated with the transportation and sales of bread and confectionery products. The role includes calling on customers such as traders and retail chain stores, taking orders, delivering directly from the vehicle, handling frequent cash transactions, and acquiring new customers.

This position reports to the Distribution Manager and offers a stable permanent opportunity for experienced Code 10 drivers with FMCG exposure.

Purpose of the Role

The Code 10 Driver Salesman is responsible for transporting and selling bread and confectionery products while maintaining strong customer relationships along assigned routes.

The role combines driving, direct sales, customer service, stock management, and cash handling responsibilities. Drivers are expected to maintain high hygiene standards, adhere to safety regulations, ensure correct stock control, and contribute to daily sales growth.

This role is suited to individuals who are customer-orientated, disciplined, and capable of working in fast-paced FMCG distribution environments.

Key Responsibilities

The driver must maintain a clean vehicle at all times to ensure hygiene standards are met. Prescribed PPE clothing and equipment must be worn as required.

The driving compartment must be clean and safe according to Occupational Health and Safety Act requirements. Vehicles must be checked according to company checklists, and any faults must be recorded and reported. Serious faults must be reported immediately to the supervisor, and the vehicle must be sent to the workshop if necessary. Replacement vehicles must be arranged when repairs require extended time.

Adherence to statutory road rules is mandatory to ensure the safety of the driver, passengers, and other road users. Any theft, fuel loss, vehicle damage, or accidents must be reported immediately to the Logistics Manager and handled according to company procedures.

Stock must be checked to ensure it matches the loading sheet. Discrepancies must be reported to the Route Controller. Drivers must inspect stock quality before departure and report any issues. Drivers may assist with loading when required.

The driver is responsible for supervising the van assistant, ensuring attendance, presentability, and performance standards. Coaching and training of the van assistant must be conducted to maintain company standards.

Customer service is a critical responsibility. The driver must always be friendly, helpful, and respectful. Opportunities to increase daily sales must be identified by growing sales to existing customers and acquiring new customers. Any potential customer losses must be reported, and proactive efforts must be made to retain customers.

The driver must implement promotions as required and maintain weekly communication with customers to sustain service levels.

Deliveries must match customer orders. If sales exceed stock levels, arrangements must be made for replenishment. Customers must be informed in cases of short deliveries. Orders for the following day must be secured and submitted to the sales department timeously.

Crate recovery is mandatory to minimise losses, and all crates must be returned to Sunshine Bakery premises on the same day.

Drivers are responsible for safeguarding cash, stock, and paperwork. Cash must be deposited immediately into the vehicle safe. Accurate completion of invoices, delivery notes, loading schedules, crate control documents, and vehicle logs is required.

Cash-ups must be completed in the presence of the supervisor. All monies and documentation must balance, and shortages must be investigated within the specified timeframes.

Drivers must also collect competitor sales information, competitor product information, and competitor products when required.

Minimum Requirements

Grade 12

Valid Driver’s License (Code 10)

Valid PDP

Minimum 2 years driving experience within FMCG

Experience delivering and selling FMCG products for cash to both existing and new customers

Skills and Competencies

Ability to read, write, understand, and communicate in English

Good numeracy skills

Strong customer orientation

Fault awareness and reporting ability

Ability to work under pressure

Prepared to work weekends, public holidays, overtime, and standby when required

Self-discipline and accountability

Team collaboration and supervision capability

Work Environment and Operational Focus

This role operates within the FMCG baking distribution environment. Drivers are expected to work weekends, public holidays, overtime, and standby shifts when necessary.

The position requires strong physical stamina, route discipline, cash-handling responsibility, and strict adherence to safety and hygiene standards.

Drivers may also be required to perform duties of van assistant or loader as business needs demand. Compliance with Occupational Health and Safety standards is mandatory, and any health conditions that may affect driving ability must be reported to the supervisor.
