What Does a Government Cleaner Do?
Cleaners are essential to maintaining a safe, hygienic, and professional environment at the Joint Support Base Garrison. In this role, you will be responsible for cleaning offices, ablution facilities, and other areas as directed by your supervisor — ensuring that all facilities meet the high standards expected in a military environment.
This is a hands-on, physical role that requires reliability, attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a structured military setting.
Key Responsibilities of a Cleaner
General Cleaning Duties
- Sweep, mop, and vacuum floors in offices and other assigned facilities.
- Clean windows, dust surfaces, and polish furniture and floors to required standards.
- Ensure all areas are kept clean, neat, and presentable at all times.
- Complete all cleaning tasks as directed by the supervisor.
Ablution & Facility Cleaning
- Clean and sanitise ablution facilities including toilets, basins, showers, and bathrooms.
- Ensure ablution facilities are stocked, hygienic, and odour-free at all times.
- Apply appropriate cleaning chemicals and disinfectants safely and correctly.
Cleaning Equipment & Machinery
- Operate cleaning machines safely and correctly as required.
- Perform basic maintenance of cleaning machinery with low levels of complexity.
- Use basic hand tools and cleaning equipment responsibly and effectively.
- Report any equipment defects or damage to the supervisor before use.
Defect Reporting & Workplace Safety
- Report any defects, damage, or hazards identified in the workplace to the immediate supervisor promptly.
- Adhere to all health and safety regulations applicable to cleaning environments.
- Apply hygiene and safety measures consistently throughout the work environment.
- Ensure cleaning materials and equipment are stored safely after use.
Teamwork & Communication
- Communicate effectively in English with supervisors and team members.
- Work collaboratively with the cleaning team as well as independently when required.
- Maintain good interpersonal relations with colleagues and military personnel.
- Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, and integrity in all duties.
Minimum Requirements – Cleaner

Educational Qualifications:
- Minimum ABET qualification
- No Matric (Grade 12) required
