What Does a Government Cleaner Do?

Cleaners are essential to maintaining a safe, hygienic, and professional environment at the Joint Support Base Garrison. Key Responsibilities of a Cleaner

General Cleaning Duties

• Sweep, mop, and vacuum floors in offices and other assigned facilities.
• Clean windows, dust surfaces, and polish furniture and floors to required standards.
• Ensure all areas are kept clean, neat, and presentable at all times.
• Complete all cleaning tasks as directed by the supervisor.

Ablution & Facility Cleaning

• Clean and sanitise ablution facilities including toilets, basins, showers, and bathrooms.
• Ensure ablution facilities are stocked, hygienic, and odour-free at all times.
• Apply appropriate cleaning chemicals and disinfectants safely and correctly.

Cleaning Equipment & Machinery

• Operate cleaning machines safely and correctly as required.
• Perform basic maintenance of cleaning machinery with low levels of complexity.
• Use basic hand tools and cleaning equipment responsibly and effectively.
• Report any equipment defects or damage to the supervisor before use.

Defect Reporting & Workplace Safety

• Report any defects, damage, or hazards identified in the workplace to the immediate supervisor promptly.
• Adhere to all health and safety regulations applicable to cleaning environments.
• Apply hygiene and safety measures consistently throughout the work environment.
• Ensure cleaning materials and equipment are stored safely after use.

Teamwork & Communication

• Communicate effectively in English with supervisors and team members.
• Work collaboratively with the cleaning team as well as independently when required.
• Maintain good interpersonal relations with colleagues and military personnel.
• Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, and integrity in all duties.

Minimum Requirements – Cleaner

Educational Qualifications:

• Minimum ABET qualification
• No Matric (Grade 12) required
