Permanent Cleaning Opportunities – Cape Town Regional Office

The Department of Public Works invites applications from dedicated and hardworking individuals for ten (10) Cleaner: Facilities Management – Cleaning Services positions based at various courts and government facilities within the Cape Town Regional Office.

These positions play a vital role in ensuring that government buildings, courts, and public spaces remain clean, hygienic, safe, and presentable. The roles are well suited to individuals who are physically fit, reliable, and committed to maintaining high standards of cleanliness within a public service environment.

About the Role

The Cleaner: Facilities Management – Cleaning Services role is focused on providing comprehensive cleaning services across offices, courtrooms, kitchens, ablution facilities, and open spaces. Successful candidates will contribute to creating a clean, orderly, and safe environment for government employees, court officials, and members of the public.

The role involves physical work over extended periods and exposure to cleaning chemicals and potentially hazardous working conditions. Candidates must therefore be physically fit and able to perform routine cleaning duties consistently and responsibly.


Key Responsibilities

Cleaning of Buildings and Public Areas

  • Clean offices, courtrooms, and open spaces

  • Sweep passages, office floors, pavements, and basements

  • Empty dustbins and ensure proper waste disposal

  • Dust and polish wooden tables and other furniture

  • Clean windows, doors, and walls

  • Scrub, mop, and polish floors

  • Vacuum carpets

  • Refill water bottles with fresh water


Cleaning of Toilets and Ablution Facilities

  • Perform deep cleaning of toilets

  • Wash basins, walls, and floors

  • Refill toilet dispensers with toilet paper

  • Refill handwashing soap dispensers


Kitchen Cleaning and Support Duties

  • Wash dishes during forums and official meetings

  • Clean kitchen floors and appliances

  • Assist with tea and coffee service during meetings and forums


Safety and Facility Support

  • Report defects encountered during cleaning

  • Alert staff to slippery floors and staircases

  • Notify supervisors of faulty light bulbs, broken locks, or other safety concerns


Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Junior Certificate (Grade 8), ABET Level 4, or equivalent qualification

  • No prior experience required

  • Basic communication and literacy skills

  • Good interpersonal skills

  • Ability to perform routine cleaning tasks

  • Physically fit to work long hours

  • Ability to work in environments exposed to chemicals and hazardous conditions

Knowledge of cleaning materials, equipment, and proper usage will be an added advantage.
