Chief Directorate: Emergency and Clinical Services Support – Western Cape Health Cleaner Vacancies 2026

The Western Cape Department of Health invites suitably qualified candidates to apply for the position of CLEANER within the Chief Directorate: Emergency and Clinical Services Support at Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Overberg District. This role is essential in maintaining high standards of hygiene, safety, and cleanliness within healthcare emergency service facilities.

The successful candidate will provide cleaning services across offices, common areas, kitchens, ablution facilities, and EMS operational grounds. This position supports infection control measures and ensures that patients, staff, and visitors operate within a clean and safe environment.

Candidates with previous experience working as cleaners in healthcare facilities will be preferred.

Salary

R138 486 per annum

Salary will be paid according to government public service remuneration structures for Level 02 positions.

Minimum Requirements

Educational Qualification:

• Basic numeracy and literacy skills.

Experience Requirements:

• Appropriate experience working as a cleaner in a health facility environment.

• Proven ability to perform cleaning duties in high hygiene standard environments.

Inherent Job Requirements:

• Willingness to work shifts and weekends.

• Ability to perform physical cleaning tasks throughout the shift.

Competencies and Skills:

• Good time management skills.

• Knowledge of Health and Safety procedures within healthcare environments.

• Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Cleaning Services

• Clean offices, common areas, kitchens, and ablution facilities at EMS bases and grounds.

• Perform deep cleaning and detailed sanitation tasks as required.

Infection Control and Hygiene Maintenance

• Maintain a clean, safe, and hygienic environment to prevent infection and injury risks.

• Perform the following cleaning tasks:

  • Sweeping, mopping, and scrubbing floors.

  • Dusting and polishing floors and furniture.

  • Emptying waste bins daily.

  • Cleaning windows, light fittings, walls, toilets, sluices, and drainage systems.

Equipment and Stock Management

• Ensure cleaning equipment such as mops, buckets, brooms, and scrubbing machines are cleaned after use.

• Store cleaning equipment securely after completion of duties.

• Maintain proper stock control of cleaning materials and report shortages.

Waste Management

• Remove general waste from buildings daily in accordance with health and safety standards.

Operational Support

• Notify management of maintenance issues, defects, or repair requirements.

• Provide relief cleaning services according to operational service needs.

The Cleaner plays an important role in maintaining infection prevention standards within emergency medical service environments.

The position is based within Emergency Medical Services, Overberg District.

The work environment involves emergency service facilities where strict hygiene and safety standards must be maintained at all times. The role requires physical stamina and the ability to work under operational pressure.
