Position Overview

The ARC seeks to appoint highly skilled, experienced, and motivated casual workers for the Tropical & Subtropical Crops (ARC-TSC) division in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga.

This is a three-month fixed-term contract offering practical exposure to orchard operations, general maintenance, and fieldwork in a professional agricultural research environment. Casual workers will support daily operational tasks to ensure that field trials and orchards are properly maintained and protected.


Key Responsibilities

Casual workers will be expected to:

  • Perform general orchard tasks including planting, pruning, irrigation, and harvesting.

  • Conduct general orchard maintenance to ensure optimal growth and productivity.

  • Carry out manual tasks as assigned by supervisors.

  • Ensure effective protection of field trials from animal interference.

  • Use and maintain tools and equipment provided by the ARC.

  • Observe and adhere to Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) instructions at all times.

  • Support the team with additional fieldwork duties as required.


Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Grade 10 or equivalent qualification.

  • Basic understanding of agricultural practices and farm operations.

  • Knowledge of manual operation of farm equipment and machinery.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Good understanding of health and safety procedures.

  • Willingness to work under adverse weather conditions.

  • Must be able to follow instructions and work as part of a team environment.

  • Strong attention to detail in maintaining field trials and orchards.

  • Time management skills to complete tasks within deadlines.
