Position Overview

GBS is recruiting a Cashier for the Canteen Division in Umhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal. The successful candidate will ensure accurate cash handling, efficient service delivery, and a welcoming environment for staff and customers.

This role is ideal for individuals with experience in POS operations, food service support, and retail customer service, who thrive in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Process all cash, card, and credit transactions accurately using Smart Retail POS systems.

  • Issue receipts, refunds, and change correctly.

  • Greet and assist customers professionally, providing excellent customer service.

  • Resolve customer complaints and provide relevant information promptly.

  • Scan goods and ensure pricing accuracy.

  • Cross-sell products and introduce new offerings.

  • Handle merchandise returns, exchanges, and stock replenishment.

  • Pack and prepare food items for campaigns and service periods.

  • Dish food according to portion guidelines and monitor service flow.

  • Maintain a clean, hygienic, and organised workstation.

  • Check incoming stock, label, date, and rotate items using the FIFO system.

  • Adhere to Food Hygiene, Health, and Safety Regulations at all times.

  • Assist in other kitchen areas when cashier duties are complete.

Minimum Requirements

Education:

  • Minimum Grade 12 / Matric

Experience:

  • At least 2 years’ experience as a cashier, preferably in a food service or retail environment

  • Experience with Smart Retail POS systems

Skills and Competencies:

  • Basic PC literacy

  • Knowledge of health, safety, and hygiene standards

  • Manual dexterity and ability to operate POS systems

  • Customer-focused mindset with strong attention to detail
