Department and Duty Station
The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) invites suitably qualified and dedicated candidates to apply for Case Officer positions within the Free State and Northern Cape Region, based at the Mangaung Maximum Correctional Centre. These appointments are made in terms of the Correctional Service Act and are critical to the effective administration of offender sentence management, parole processes, and rehabilitation programmes within a maximum-security correctional environment.
This role is ideal for individuals who are highly organised, detail-oriented, and capable of managing sensitive offender information while upholding strict confidentiality and procedural accuracy.
Salary Structure
Successful candidates will be appointed at the appropriate Correctional Band (CB1) level based on their experience:

CB1-1: R212 358 per annum
-
CB1-2: R257 895 per annum
-
CB1-3: R313 521 per annum
Salaries are determined in accordance with public service regulations and applicable conditions of service.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

Matric / Grade 12

Successful completion of one of the following:

Correctional Science Learnership
-
Basic Training
-
Induction Training Course (ITC)
-
Experience Requirements
-
CB1-1: No previous experience required
-
CB1-2: At least 10 years relevant experience at CB1-1 level
-
CB1-3: At least 10 years relevant experience at CB1-2 level

Candidates must be able to work under pressure, apply policies accurately, and maintain high levels of professionalism, discipline, and ethical conduct.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Case Officers play a central role in offender management and sentence administration. Successful candidates will be responsible for the following duties, among others:

Exercising control over offender sentence plans
-
Updating sentence plans in line with recommendations from the Case Management Committee (CMC) and feedback from relevant functionaries
-
Completing and appropriating G331 and G356 forms and updating electronic systems in accordance with CMC decisions
-
Referring written decisions and recommendations of the CMC to the appropriate offices or functionaries
-
Ensuring that referrals of cases and enquiries by the CMC are made under the signature of the chairperson and that feedback is received
-
Exercising control over offender profile reports (G326)
-
Compiling profile reports and ensuring they are correctly completed with all required information
-
Referring profile reports to the Secretary of the CMC
-
Maintaining and updating the profile register
-
Recording electronically the receipt, forwarding, and return of parole or correctional supervision recommendations
-
Exercising strict documentation control, including updating the G325 control page in respect of CMC decisions
-
Managing administrative duties such as opening, closing, addressing, filing, receiving, and forwarding of mail and documents
-
Ensuring proper care and handling of classified and confidential documents
-
Dealing with offender representations and verifying the accuracy of information provided
-
Checking calculations related to minimum detention periods and release dates
-
Verifying that all relevant documentation is attached to submissions made to the Head of the Correctional Centre
-
Ensuring confidentiality of correspondence between offenders and the CMC
-
Ensuring original documentation is submitted where required
-
Maintaining safe custody through searching of venues and offenders
-
Ensuring offenders do not move around uncontrolled
-
Confirming that the number of offenders received and returned to units corresponds
-
Ensuring that equipment is not abused or misused by offenders
This role requires precision, accountability, and strict adherence to correctional policies and procedures.
