Position Overview
GBS is seeking a Canteen General Assistant to join its vibrant inhouse canteen team in Umhlanga. This role is perfect for a hands-on, energetic, and service-driven individual who thrives in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment.
The successful candidate will support food service operations, ensure cleanliness of the canteen, assist with venue setups, and uphold food safety standards. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys practical work and delivering outstanding service.
Key Responsibilities
General Canteen Operations
-
Perform routine tasks using chemicals, tools, machinery, and cleaning equipment.

Assist in the preparation of the canteen before and after meal services.

Support efficient service delivery within the Centenary Café.
Cleaning & Hygiene Management
-
Clean kitchens, dining halls, preparation areas, and serving stations.
-
Wash crockery, cutlery, utensils, equipment, and vending machines.
-
Execute special cleaning tasks and ad-hoc hygiene duties as required.

Remove waste and ensure canteen areas meet organisational standards.
Stock, Equipment & Maintenance
-
Unload, store, and distribute consumables and cleaning materials.
-
Report maintenance concerns and equipment issues promptly.
-
Ensure machinery, equipment, and cleaning tools are used safely.
Events, Setups & Support
-
Assist with venue setups for functions (e.g., arranging chairs, tables).
-
Ensure canteen facilities are neat, orderly, and ready for use.
-
Participate in additional tasks assigned by supervisors.
Food Safety & Compliance
-
Adhere to Food Safety Management Practices and Standards.

Maintain excellent personal hygiene and follow safe working procedures.

Ensure all cleaning practices meet health and safety regulations.
Minimum Requirements
Essential Criteria
-
1–2 years’ experience as a General Assistant in a canteen, restaurant, or hospitality environment.
-
Currently employed within GBS for at least 6 months.
-
Must have achieved all the following in the past 3 months:
-
90% attendance average
-
No active warnings
-
Not on any performance improvement programme
-

Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
-
Honest, reliable, and able to work effectively in a team.
Advantageous
-
Matric (Grade 12).
-
Culinary certification or relevant hospitality training.
Core Competencies

Excellent teamwork and communication skills.

Strong attention to detail and good hand-eye coordination.

Ability to follow instructions and uphold hygiene standards.

Reliable, trustworthy, and safety-conscious.

Ability to work efficiently under pressure in a busy canteen environment.
Special Conditions of Employment

Willingness to work overtime or weekends as required.

Physically capable of performing manual, cleaning, and lifting tasks.
