The department implements policies to promote a safe working environment, manage risks, and maintain compliance with relevant legislation including the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS Act) and Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act (COID).


Position Overview

The Assistant Director: Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Practitioner will ensure the implementation of comprehensive health, safety, environment, and risk management practices within correctional facilities. The incumbent will conduct inspections, audits, training, and emergency preparedness initiatives to promote a safe and compliant working environment for all employees.


Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate implementation of OHS policies in line with the Integrated Employee Health and Wellness (IEHW) framework.
  • Conduct OHS and COID inspections, audits, and risk assessments in management areas.
  • Monitor compliance of occupational health and safety standards, including mandatory contractor activities.
  • Serve as secretariat for OHS Committee meetings and ensure effective functioning at levels one and two.
  • Conduct awareness programs and training on occupational health, safety, and COID procedures.
  • Monitor medical claims, COID reporting, and the administration of medical accounts.
  • Ensure availability and maintenance of emergency evacuation procedures, first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and signage.
  • Promote a culture of safety, health, environment, risk, and quality (SHERQ) within the management area.
  • Liaise with internal stakeholders, local hospitals, medical practitioners, and external organizations to ensure compliance and effective risk management.

Minimum Requirements

  • Recognised National Diploma or Degree in Safety Management or equivalent.
  • 3–5 years supervisory experience in occupational health and safety.
  • Proficiency in computer applications and reporting tools.
  • Valid driver’s licence.

Core Competencies

  • Knowledge of OHS Act, COID, SHERQ policy, and Public Service regulations.
  • Understanding of collective agreements regarding occupational health and safety.
  • Budgeting and project management skills (PFMA compliance).
  • Strong communication, presentation, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to develop, monitor, and implement policies and procedures.
  • Networking and stakeholder liaison skills.
