This position plays a vital role in enhancing the wellbeing of employees through psychosocial support, wellness programmes, crisis intervention, and compliance with Employee Health and Wellness (EHW) statutes.


Position Overview

The Assistant Director: Employee Health and Wellness will design, coordinate, and implement holistic wellness programmes and health interventions for DOA employees.
You will lead psychosocial services, organisational wellness initiatives, sports & recreation policy implementation, crisis response, and performance management of the EHW team.

This role requires a strong counselling background, public service EHW experience, and the ability to deliver impactful wellness solutions in a complex government environment.


Key Responsibilities

1. Employee Health & Wellness Programme Management

  • Design and coordinate EHW services and wellness programmes.
  • Implement organisational and individual wellness initiatives aligned with DOA needs.
  • Oversee nutrition and sports/recreation activities as per policy.

2. Psychosocial Support & Crisis Intervention

  • Provide psychosocial support to employees.
  • Deliver specialised trauma and crisis interventions within 24–72 hours when required.
  • Offer guidance and support to peer counsellors across the department.

3. Employee Needs Analysis & Reporting

  • Conduct wellness assessments to identify risks, challenges, and support needs.
  • Compile sessional and DPSA reports for compliance and performance tracking.
  • Capture and analyse wellness data for strategic planning.

4. Training, Development & Workshop Facilitation

  • Develop workshop materials for wellness programmes.
  • Organise training sessions on mental health, management support, and EHW initiatives.
  • Promote awareness of wellness services across DOA units.

5. Performance & Operational Management

  • Manage the performance of direct reports.
  • Ensure adherence to statutory frameworks, including labour legislation and EHW policies.
  • Support operational planning and project management within the unit.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work or Psychology
  • Professional registration with:
    • SACSSP (for Social Workers), or
    • HPCSA (for Psychologists)
  • 3 years supervisory experience in Employee Health and Wellness
  • Valid driver’s licence & willingness to travel
