Mechanical Artisan Opportunity at Sasol Secunda Operations
Sasol, a global integrated chemicals and energy company with a 75-year heritage, is seeking a qualified Artisan Mechanical Fitter Grade 2 to join its operations in Secunda, Mpumalanga. Purpose of the Role
The Artisan Mechanical Fitter Grade 2 is responsible for operating basic mechanical and electro-mechanical equipment and machines. The role includes carrying out routine maintenance tasks in line with strict and detailed instructions to meet defined performance targets.
This position supports plant stability and sustainability through adherence to safety systems, maintenance documentation standards, and engineering best practices.
Key Accountabilities
The successful candidate must demonstrate proven competence in pre-identified discipline-specific areas within the plant, mine, equipment, or systems environment.
The Artisan must understand and effectively use the plant maintenance documentation system as well as the planning work management system.
Basic plant or mine process knowledge, defined per discipline, is required.
Compliance with Safety Management Systems such as IMS, MBO, and related systems is mandatory. The candidate must be able to apply emergency procedures and conduct hazard identification and task risk assessments.
The role includes reading, interpreting, and implementing task risk assessments while actively participating in daily morning meetings to discuss work assignments.
The Artisan Mechanical Fitter will support business goals and vision by meeting deadlines and providing adequate feedback to supervisors on work progress.
Participation in root cause analyses (RCA) and providing feedback to RCA teams is required to improve reliability and safety performance.
The role includes participating in risk assessments according to legislative and company requirements to improve plant safety and sustainability.
Good housekeeping practices must be maintained at all times, and waste disposal procedures must be strictly adhered to.
The Artisan is expected to share knowledge with junior artisans within the known environment and participate in quarterly performance appraisals with the group leader to improve personal development.
Identifying personal training and development needs and incorporating them into the Personal Development Plan (PDP) with group leader approval is required.
The candidate must lead by example, assist in the development of work instructions to enhance staff competency, and take the lead in team efforts or tasks where appropriate.
Where aligned with career progression, the Artisan may act as group leader and contribute to the overall maintenance strategy and direction.
Informal mentoring of learners and artisans is expected.
The role includes conducting My IMS inspections to maintain and improve plant sustainability, participating in PDAs and RCAs to enhance plant safety and stability, and ensuring correct history feedback is captured for renewals, upgrades, and replacement of critical spares.
Active participation in toolbox talks to improve plant safety is required.
Minimum Qualifications
Matric or N3 with Mathematics, English, and Physical Science is required.
An Occupational Trade Qualification (Mechanical Red Seal) is mandatory.
A valid Driver’s Licence is required.
Experience Requirements
A minimum of 3 or more years of relevant working experience in a mechanical maintenance or industrial environment is required.
