Role Summary

The Artisan Assistant provides critical support to our qualified Artisans in the maintenance, inspection, and repair of VKB’s vast Silo Facilities. This role is deeply hands-on, involving frequent travel between sites and the opportunity to gain skills in fitting, welding, and electrical troubleshooting. You will be a key player in ensuring that our silo infrastructure remains operational, safe, and efficient.

Key Work Output and Accountabilities

1. Mechanical & Electrical Support

Technical Assistance: Support artisans during mechanical builds, repairs, and custom installations. Assist in the fabrication, fitting, and assembly of essential components.
Electrical Duties: Perform basic electrical tasks under supervision, including the use of test meters and hand equipment like grinders and drills.
Maintenance: Help with preventative maintenance and inspections of chutes, valves, structures, and mechanical components.

2. Fabrication & Boiler Making

Welding & Cutting: Assist in boiler making activities such as cutting, grinding, and basic welding once trained.
Tool Proficiency: Safely and effectively use a wide range of hand tools, including grinders, drills, and spanners.
Equipment Care: Responsible for the cleaning of cables and electrical equipment during daily maintenance routines.

3. Safety & Site Operations

Height & Confinement: Work at extreme heights (up to 60 meters) and in confined spaces, adhering to strict safety protocols.
Site Travel: Travel frequently with the Artisan to various silo sites for routine maintenance and emergency support.
Compliance: Constantly comply with Health and Safety (OHSA) standards in the execution of all worksheets and maintenance tasks.

Requirements & Competencies

Education & Qualifications

Minimum Education: Grade 12 or NQF4.
Certification: A valid trade certificate or medical fitness certificate will be highly advantageous.
Driver’s License: A valid driver’s license is a strong advantage due to frequent travel requirements.

Technical Experience

Multidisciplinary: Strong mechanical and electrical experience in both fields is essential.
Troubleshooting: Proven ability to troubleshoot basic mechanical and electrical issues.
Physical Fitness: Must be medically fit and comfortable working at extreme heights and in confined spaces.

Core Skills

Teamwork: Excellent communication and the ability to work effectively as a team player under high pressure.
Accountability: A strong sense of responsibility and meticulous attention to detail.
Growth Mindset: A practical, hands-on ability and a genuine willingness to undergo training toward a full qualification.
