Role Purpose

The Ambulance Emergency Assistant is responsible for delivering high-quality Intermediate Life Support (ILS) treatment to patients in emergency situations. You will ensure operational excellence by maintaining rapid response times, adhering to strict HPCSA protocols, and ensuring that all medical equipment and vehicles are mission-ready. Key Work Output and Accountabilities

Operational Excellence & Administrative Duties

  • Legal Documentation: Complete all company and legal documentation essential in the completion of your duty, ensuring copies are handed to the Operations Manager.

  • Clinical Records: Ensure hospital records are completed in accordance with internal requirements whenever a patient is delivered to the casualty/emergency unit.

  • Digital Reporting: Complete E-Patient Report Forms (EPRF) accurately for every patient treated.

  • General Admin: Complete paperwork for overtime and leave, and perform other reasonable duties as requested by the Operational Manager.

Quality Improvement & Patient Care

  • Emergency Treatment: Respond to emergencies and administer Intermediate Life Support treatment as per HPCSA protocols and regulations.

  • Scope Management: Immediately call for backup if a patient’s condition requires treatment that exceeds your scope of practice and competency.

  • Call Logging: Log all calls with the Netcare 911 Call Centre and obtain a Case Number for every call attended.

  • Continuous Development: Attend CME training to maintain CPD compliance and stay familiar with changes to treatment protocols prescribed by the HPCSA.

Vehicle and Equipment Management

  • Shift Readiness: Ensure a detailed check of the vehicle and equipment assigned to you before commencement of your shift on CARS.

  • Hygiene Standards: Maintain the cleanliness of all vehicles and equipment daily, with a thorough cleaning session once a week.

  • Maintenance: Keep all equipment in satisfactory working condition in accordance with manufacturers’ details and prevent loss or theft.

  • Drug Control: Maintain accurate record-keeping for all drugs used and in your possession.

Health and Safety

  • COID Compliance: Ensure compliance with Compensation for Occupational Injuries & Diseases Act requirements and report injuries sustained on duty immediately.

  • Safe Driving: Utilize safe and considerate driving techniques at all times while in control of the company vehicle.

  • Scene Management: Ensure the scene of an incident is safe to approach and wear appropriate protective gear on each scene as necessary.

Skills Profile

Education (Essential)

  • HPCSA Registration: Current registration with the HPCSA: Professional Board of Emergency Care Personnel as an AEA.

  • Guidelines: Must be up to date with the latest HPCSA CPG guidelines.

  • Licensing: A valid Code 10 Driver’s License with a valid PrDP (passengers).

Work Experience (Essential)

  • Age Requirement: Must be over 21 years old.

  • Clinical Experience: 2 years post-graduate patient care experience in an operational environment would be beneficial.

  • Digital Literacy: Computer proficiency is beneficial (Microsoft Office).

Knowledge

  • Legislation: Good general knowledge and understanding of legislation pertaining to the specific business environment of Netcare 911.
