Position Overview

Dis-Chem Pharmacies has an exciting opportunity for a Pharmacist Intern at its Blue Route Mall store in Cape Town. This internship is designed to equip aspiring pharmacists with comprehensive, hands-on training in the key areas of pharmacy operations — from dispensing and stock control to patient care and compliance.

The intern will support qualified pharmacists in delivering high-quality pharmaceutical services, ensuring legal and ethical standards are maintained while promoting optimal patient health outcomes.


Minimum Requirements

Essential:

  • Grade 12 / Matric

  • Completed BPharm (4-year degree)

  • Computer literate (MS Office)

Advantageous:

  • Prior work experience during studies (holiday work or internship exposure)

  • Familiarity with Unisolv and E-Scripting


Key Responsibilities

  • Perform all functions related to the scope of practice of a Pharmacist’s Assistant (Post Basic) under direct supervision of a qualified pharmacist.

  • Assist with the sale of Schedule 1 and Schedule 2 medicines and other scheduled substances.

  • Participate in the compounding, preparation, and packaging of both sterile and non-sterile medicines according to approved SOPs.

  • Support the manufacturing, re-packaging, and distribution of medicines and scheduled substances.

  • Assist in reading and preparing prescriptions, selecting and labelling medication, and ensuring accuracy before pharmacist verification.

  • Educate patients on correct medication use, potential side effects, and dosage instructions.

  • Process and submit medical aid claims accurately, resolving any rejections or discrepancies.

  • Support the dispensary manager with stock control, ordering, and reporting.

  • Ensure proper stock rotation (FEFO), participate in regular stocktakes, and report low or out-of-stock levels.

  • Maintain patient profiles, merge records, and update relevant medical information.

  • Deliver exceptional customer service at the dispensary, self-medication, and front-shop areas.

  • Comply with Dis-Chem’s operating standards, SOPs, and Health & Safety regulations.


Core Competencies

Essential:

  • Proficiency in English and a second language (read, write, and speak)

  • Application of knowledge gained during BPharm studies

  • Strong communication, listening, and interpersonal skills

  • Excellent attention to detail and numerical accuracy

  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines

  • Team player with a customer-service mindset

  • Professional integrity and reliability

  • Proficiency in MS Office

Advantageous:

  • Knowledge of FMCG or retail pharmacy operations

  • Understanding of complementary medicine, family planning, and health supplements

  • Third additional language proficiency


Special Conditions of Employment

  • Registered with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) or hold a valid work permit

  • Willing and able to work retail hours, including weekends and holidays

  • Physically fit and able to stand for long periods

  • Clear criminal and credit records

  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transport

  • Must adhere to controlled room temperature, security, and health & safety protocols
