Position Overview

Unitrans is seeking experienced and professional Bus Drivers to operate passenger vehicles on scheduled routes within Cape Town. Reporting to the Operations Supervisor, the Bus Driver will ensure passengers arrive safely, on time, and in comfort, while maintaining strict adherence to traffic laws, company policies, and safety standards.

This role is restricted to candidates with tourism experience, as it involves transporting passengers under commercial contracts not subsidized by government.

Key Responsibilities

1. Passenger Transport Operations

  • Drive a bus to transport passengers on scheduled services over established routes.

  • Control lighting, heating, ventilation, and other passenger comfort systems.

  • Maintain punctuality and ensure passengers arrive safely at their destinations.

  • Comply with all traffic laws, company policies, and driver manuals.

2. Safety and Vehicle Maintenance

  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle.

  • Record and report vehicle deviations, defects, or malfunctions to the supervisor.

  • Ensure proper use of seat belts and other safety features.

  • Block vehicle wheels after parking and maintain vehicle cleanliness.

  • Follow safe driving practices, including defensive and preventive driving techniques.

3. Customer Service and Compliance

  • Maintain a professional appearance and conduct at all times.

  • Provide excellent customer service, including handling luggage.

  • Register passengers and ensure all documentation and logbooks are completed accurately.

  • Adhere strictly to route schedules and avoid deviations unless authorized.

  • Report incidents, near misses, and property damage promptly to management.

4. Training and Development

  • Participate in company training, DSS sessions, and in-house medical assessments.

  • Engage with supervisors to continuously improve safety, service quality, and operational efficiency.

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12 / Matric qualification.

  • Valid Code EC or EC1 driver’s license with a current PrDP (Professional Driving Permit).

  • Proven experience driving coaches/buses, with a preference for tourism experience.

  • Safety-conscious and committed to high-quality customer service.

  • Excellent communication, navigation, and interpersonal skills.

  • Professional appearance and conduct.

  • Ability to work irregular hours, including weekends and holidays.

  • Ability to handle luggage and maintain vehicle cleanliness.

  • Basic mechanical knowledge is advantageous.

  • Willingness to undergo in-house training and medical examination by the company doctor.

  • Punctual, calm under pressure, and reliable.
