About the Role
The Millwright Artisan at RCL Foods Krugersdorp is responsible for ensuring that all manufacturing equipment in the Pies division is serviced, maintained, and repaired in accordance with specifications and in line with good engineering practice. This is a hands-on, technically demanding role covering the full spectrum of millwright responsibilities — from planned preventative maintenance and daily machine inspections to reactive fault-finding and repair, root cause analysis, PLC and VSD fault-finding, welding, fitting, hydraulic and pneumatic work, and supporting production line start-ups and set-ups.
The successful candidate will work across a diverse range of specialised food manufacturing equipment — including pie lines, spiral freezers, DEJONG and Handtmann machines, x-rays, metal detectors, ovens, flow wrappers, tumbler machines, cubers, mixers, and vacuum pumps — as well as ammonia and glycol plant systems, boilers, air compressors, conveyor systems, and more. This role demands someone who is technically versatile, safety-conscious, methodical in their documentation, and committed to minimising equipment downtime and supporting the quality and food safety requirements of a high-volume food manufacturing operation.
Please note: All maintenance and repair work must be carried out in full compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, RCL Foods’ Health and Safety policies, Food Safety requirements, and the Food Safety RACI Matrix. All equipment must be made safe before work commences.

Core Values We Look For in a Millwright Artisan
Technical Versatility & Hands-On Competence
A Millwright Artisan in a food manufacturing environment needs to be genuinely multi-skilled — comfortable shifting from PLC fault-finding to bearing replacements, from TIG welding on stainless steel to lathe work, from spiral freezer repairs to hydraulic power pack diagnostics. We look for artisans who bring broad, deep technical capability to every shift and who take pride in being the person the production team calls when something complex needs to be fixed right the first time.
Preventative Mindset & Reliability Focus
Reactive maintenance is unavoidable — but minimising it through disciplined preventative maintenance and root cause analysis is what separates good artisans from great ones. We value Millwrights who take their daily inspection responsibilities seriously, who identify and address early warning signs before they become production stoppages, and who follow through on corrective actions to ensure the same failure does not recur.
Safety Leadership & OHS Compliance
Working on food manufacturing equipment — particularly with ammonia systems, electrical apparatus, and high-speed production machinery — carries inherent risk. We value artisans who make equipment safe before every job without exception, who follow Standard Maintenance Procedures rigorously, who comply with the OHS Act as a personal professional standard, and who actively model safe working practices for the production workers they train and supervise.
Documentation Discipline & Job Card Accuracy
Every maintenance activity, repair, and inspection needs to be accurately captured on a job card — on time, with full detail. We value artisans who understand that good documentation is not administrative overhead but a critical tool for maintenance planning, spare parts management, audit compliance, and root cause analysis. A well-completed job card is as much a part of the job as the spanner in the hand.
Continuous Improvement & Production Partnership
The best Millwright Artisans are not just fixers — they are improvers. We value candidates who carry out focused improvements on machines and processes, who contribute ideas that reduce downtime and increase reliability, who support production team start-ups and set-ups with enthusiasm, and who see their role as a genuine partnership with the production function — because when the equipment runs well, everything else follows.
Career Growth Opportunities in Engineering & Maintenance — Food Manufacturing
Joining RCL Foods as a Millwright Artisan in the Pies division provides a strong technical platform and clear career progression within engineering and manufacturing operations. For high-performing, continuously developing artisans, the pathway forward is well-defined:
- Millwright Artisan → Senior Millwright / Artisan Team Leader
- Senior Millwright / Artisan Team Leader → Maintenance Supervisor / Foreman
- Maintenance Supervisor / Foreman → Maintenance Manager / Engineering Manager
- Maintenance Manager / Engineering Manager → Plant Manager / Head of Engineering
Your career path is in your hands.
Frequently Asked Questions – Millwright Artisan Jobs
Is a Millwright Trade Test compulsory for this role? Yes. A certified Millwright Trade Test is an essential, non-negotiable requirement for this post. The role involves full Millwright responsibilities — covering both electrical and mechanical systems across a wide range of specialised food manufacturing equipment — and a valid trade test is the foundational qualification that confirms the candidate’s technical competence to perform this work.
What FMCG experience is required and why is it specifically stated? The role requires 2 to 5 years’ experience as an Artisan specifically in the FMCG industry. FMCG food manufacturing environments have unique equipment types, hygiene and food safety requirements, production pressure dynamics, and regulatory compliance obligations that differ meaningfully from general industrial environments. Candidates with solely mining, construction, or general manufacturing experience may not be familiar with the specific equipment — including pie lines, spiral freezers, x-rays, metal detectors, and DEJONG and Handtmann machines — or the food safety compliance requirements that apply in this environment.
What welding work is involved in this role? The Millwright Artisan is required to perform TIG and arc welding, predominantly working on stainless steel. This is standard practice in food manufacturing maintenance environments where equipment is regularly fabricated, repaired, or modified using stainless steel to meet hygiene and food safety standards. Candidates should be able to demonstrate practical welding competence, particularly on stainless steel.
What is the ammonia and glycol plant knowledge requirement? A basic knowledge and skill in operating ammonia and glycol plant systems is listed as an essential knowledge requirement. The Sunshine Krugersdorp Pies division operates refrigeration and cooling systems that incorporate these technologies. Candidates do not need to be specialist refrigeration technicians, but should have a practical working understanding of these systems sufficient to operate them safely and identify faults requiring specialist intervention.
Does this role involve training and supervising other workers? Yes. The Millwright Artisan is responsible for directing and training workers and operators to correctly install, maintain, and operate mechanical and electrical equipment. This is not a primary people management role, but candidates should be comfortable providing hands-on technical instruction and guidance to production floor personnel as part of their daily responsibilities.
