This is a people-facing, responsibility-driven role that requires a valid Code 8 driver’s licence, one year of relevant driver/messenger experience, sound knowledge of driving services, and reliable record-keeping habits. Candidates must demonstrate the personal attributes of reliability, punctuality, and confidentiality — qualities that are non-negotiable in a position that involves the movement of officials and sensitive departmental documents.

⚠️ Please note: Candidates may be required to complete a practical and theoretical test as part of the selection process.

⚠️ Application requirement: All applications must be submitted online only via the Department’s e-recruitment portal. No manual, postal, or email applications will be accepted.

Core Values We Look For in a Driver/Messenger

✅ Responsibility & Accountability

Driving government officials, transporting sensitive documents, and operating a departmental vehicle all require a candidate who takes their responsibilities seriously. We value drivers who exercise sound judgment on the road, complete logbooks and trip authorisations accurately, and approach every assignment with a strong sense of personal accountability.

✅ Confidentiality & Discretion

The Driver/Messenger frequently handles sensitive official documents and transports senior officials — both of which demand absolute discretion. We value candidates who maintain strict confidentiality at all times, understand the importance of information security in a government environment, and never compromise on the privacy of the officials and documentation in their care.

✅ Safety Consciousness & OHSA Compliance

Conducting routine vehicle safety checks and operating in full compliance with Occupational Health and Safety protocols is a core part of this role. We value drivers who prioritise safety — checking vehicles before every trip, driving responsibly, reporting defects promptly, and ensuring that every journey is completed safely and within all applicable regulations.

✅ Reliability & Punctuality

Officials depend on their driver to arrive on time, every time. Document deliveries have deadlines. Trip schedules cannot be disrupted. We value candidates who understand that punctuality is not just a courtesy but a professional obligation — and who consistently deliver on their commitments without needing to be followed up.

✅ Record Keeping & Administrative Diligence

Completing vehicle logbooks, trip authorisations, and delivery records accurately is as important as the driving itself. We value drivers who maintain neat, complete, and up-to-date records — understanding that administrative accountability underpins the Department’s compliance, audit readiness, and operational integrity.

Career Growth Opportunities in Government Transport, Administration & Support Services

Starting as a Driver/Messenger in a national government department is a solid entry point into a long-term public sector career in support services and administration. For motivated individuals, progression is clear:

  • Driver/Messenger → Senior Driver / Registry Clerk: Support Services
  • Registry Clerk → Administration Clerk: Corporate Support Services
  • Administration Clerk → Administration Officer: Corporate Services
  • Administration Officer → Assistant Director: Auxiliary & Support Services

Your career path is in your hands.
