What is the disease control fence near Phalaborwa and Kruger Park? The disease control fence is a government-maintained barrier running along the boundary of the Kruger National Park — designed to prevent wild animals and livestock from crossing between the park, communal farming areas, and neighbouring countries. This fence is critical to protecting South Africa from the spread of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) and other transboundary animal diseases that could devastate the livestock industry and cost South Africa its international meat export markets. As a Tradesman Aid in Phalaborwa, maintaining this fence is your primary responsibility.

Will I encounter wild animals in this job near Phalaborwa? Yes — Phalaborwa borders the Kruger National Park, and the disease control fence patrol area regularly features elephant, lion, buffalo, hippo, and other wildlife. You will not be required to handle or approach wild animals, but you must be comfortable working in an environment where wildlife encounters are a regular reality. The Department provides appropriate training and protocols for working safely in this environment.

Is this post based in Phalaborwa or must I travel to Pretoria to work? The work location is Phalaborwa, Limpopo — not Pretoria. Applications are submitted to the Pretoria address or by email, but the actual day-to-day work is performed at the disease control fence patrol area in Phalaborwa, Limpopo.
