Frequently Asked Questions – Tradesman Aid Animal Health Jobs Mpumalanga 2026

Do I need a Matric or Grade 12 to apply for this Tradesman Aid post? No — a Matric or Grade 12 certificate is not required. The minimum qualification for this post is an ABET certificate or Basic Education equivalent — making it accessible to candidates who did not complete secondary school. Only basic literacy and numeracy skills are required alongside the ability to work outdoors in a physically demanding environment.

What is the disease control fence and why is it important? The disease control fence is a government-maintained barrier that runs along South Africa’s borders with neighbouring countries — specifically designed to prevent the movement of animals that could spread transboundary animal diseases like Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD), African Swine Fever, and other livestock diseases. South Africa’s ability to export livestock and meat products internationally depends on maintaining disease-free zones — and the disease control fence is a critical part of that protection. As a Tradesman Aid, you directly maintain this vital national infrastructure.

What does transboundary animal disease mean and what will I look for on patrol? Transboundary animal diseases are contagious diseases that spread across national borders through the movement of infected animals or animal products. During daily patrols along the fence line in Hectorspruit, you will watch for signs such as: animals crossing the fence, dead animals (carcasses) along the fence, fence breakages or damage, and visible signs of illness in animals near the fence — all of which must be reported immediately to your supervisor.

Will I work with wild animals in this job? Yes — the Hectorspruit area borders the Kruger National Park wildlife corridor and you will work in an environment where exposure to wild animals is a regular occurrence. You will not be required to handle wild animals, but you must be comfortable working in areas where wildlife may be present. Prior experience with wildlife is not required but being comfortable outdoors in a bush environment is essential.

Is this post based in Pretoria or Mpumalanga? This post is based at Hectorspruit, Mpumalanga — not in Pretoria. Applications are submitted to the Pretoria address or by email, but the actual work location is Hectorspruit in Mpumalanga. Candidates who are based in or able to relocate to the Hectorspruit area are encouraged to apply.

Who qualifies under the EE targets for this post? The EE (Employment Equity) targets for this post include: Coloured Males, Indian Males, White Males, African Females, Coloured Females, White Females, and Persons with Disability. This is a broad EE target — preference will be given to qualifying candidates from these groups during the appointment process.
