What Does a Water Control Aid Do?

Water Control Aids are essential to the daily operation and maintenance of government water works and irrigation schemes. In this role, you will be responsible for operating sluices, managing water distribution, conducting daily inspections, performing minor maintenance on structures and equipment, and reporting defects and irregularities — ensuring that water infrastructure operates safely, efficiently, and in accordance with scheme regulations at all times.

This is a physically active, outdoor role that requires basic knowledge of water distribution, flood control, OHS practices, and record keeping in a busy government water works environment.


Key Responsibilities of a Water Control Aid

Sluice Operations & Water Distribution

  • Open and close sluices according to scheme regulations.
  • Handle the water distribution sheet accurately and in accordance with scheme regulations.
  • Ensure sluice numbers are clearly marked and visible at all times.
  • Paint sluices and long weir sluices as required.

Canal & Structure Maintenance

  • Perform minor maintenance on structures, fencing, and sluices.
  • Assist with the opening of blocked pipes and canals.
  • Remove algae and water grass from canals regularly.
  • Repair minor wash-outs and repair equipment when necessary.
  • Keep canal grids, gauge plates, and all structures and their surroundings clean at all times.
  • Keep the inlet hole to the measuring box always open and unobstructed.

Daily Inspections & Reporting

  • Conduct daily inspections on the allocated section.
  • Report holes on embankments and any irregularities on canals to the Water Control Officer.
  • Look for cracks in measuring structures and report all defects promptly.
  • Report stagnant water on embankments to the Water Control Officer immediately.

Flood Control & Safety

  • Apply basic knowledge of flood control procedures during operations and inspections.
  • Adhere to Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements in all work activities.
  • Identify and report any safety hazards or risks to the supervisor promptly.

Equipment & Stores Management

  • Keep all equipment safe and ensure the storeroom is always locked.
  • Clean and lock post boxes at all times.
  • Repair equipment when necessary and report defects to the supervisor.
  • Maintain equipment in good working order to support uninterrupted water works operations.

Record Keeping

  • Maintain basic records of water distribution and operational activities as required.
  • Ensure all inspections, defects, and incidents are accurately recorded and submitted to the Water Control Officer.
  • Assist with any reporting requirements as directed by the supervisor.

Minimum Requirements – Water Control Aid

To be considered for a Water Control Aid position, applicants must meet the following requirements:

Educational Qualifications:

  • NQF Level 2 minimum requirement
  • Senior Certificate / Grade 12 / Adult Education and Training (AET) or higher qualification will serve as an added advantage

Knowledge Requirements:

  • Basic knowledge in controlling and managing water distribution for government water works
  • Basic understanding of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS)
  • Basic knowledge of flood control
  • Basic understanding of record keeping

Skills & Competencies:

  • Good verbal communication skills
  • Good writing and reading skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and in outdoor environments
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently in the field
