What Does an Operator Do at Bastion?

Operators are essential to the safe and efficient running of Bastion’s limestone mining sites. In this role, you will support a variety of tasks across the mining operation — including transporting limestone using trackless mobile machinery (TMM) and operating crushing and screening plants. You will monitor equipment during extraction, hauling, and processing operations, perform daily equipment checks and risk assessments, and carry out maintenance tasks to keep plant operations running safely and productively.

This is a physically demanding, safety-critical role that requires a valid TMM licence, forklift licence, basic rigging certification, and hand tools certification — as well as the ability to work responsibly and accurately in an active mining environment.

Key Responsibilities of an Operator

Equipment Monitoring & Plant Operations

  • Observe and monitor equipment operation during the extraction, hauling, crushing, and screening processes.
  • Detect and report any equipment problems, irregularities, or safety concerns to the supervisor immediately.
  • Operate crushing and screening plants safely and in accordance with site procedures and manufacturer specifications.
  • Monitor plant performance continuously and take corrective action or escalate issues without delay.

Limestone Hauling (TMM Operations)

  • Transport limestone and related materials across the mining site using trackless mobile machinery (TMM).
  • Operate TMM equipment safely, within site speed limits, and in full compliance with mine health and safety regulations.
  • Conduct pre-shift and post-shift TMM inspections and complete the required daily check sheets accurately.
  • Report any TMM defects, tyre conditions, or mechanical concerns to the supervisor before commencing operations.

Materials Handling & Equipment Setup

  • Unload materials, devices, and machine parts safely using hand tools and approved manual handling techniques.
  • Set up and adjust plant equipment in accordance with operational requirements and supervisor instructions.
  • Assist with the correct placement and securing of materials during loading and offloading operations.
  • Ensure all materials handling activities are performed safely and in compliance with site risk assessments.

Maintenance Tasks

  • Perform scheduled and ad-hoc maintenance tasks on key plant equipment as directed by the supervisor or maintenance team.
  • Carry out basic preventative maintenance procedures to minimise unplanned equipment downtime.
  • Identify wear, damage, or deterioration during routine checks and report findings immediately.
  • Assist the maintenance team with equipment repairs and plant shutdowns as required.

Daily Check Sheets & Risk Assessments

  • Complete daily check sheets for all equipment in your area of work — including TMMs, conveyors, and other plant areas — accurately and on time.
  • Conduct internal risk assessments daily in your designated work area before commencing any task.
  • Identify and record hazards, near-misses, and unsafe conditions and report them to the supervisor without delay.
  • Ensure all check sheets and risk assessment documentation are correctly completed and filed for compliance purposes.

General Duties & Ad-Hoc Responsibilities

  • Assist with general duties and ad-hoc responsibilities at Bastion mining operation sites as directed.
  • Provide operational support across hauling, crushing, and screening functions as required by site management.
  • Work collaboratively with the broader site team to ensure smooth, safe, and productive mining operations at all times.

Company Values & Culture

  • Uphold and actively promote Senwes’s values and organisational culture.
  • Represent the Bastion brand with professionalism and responsibility in all interactions with colleagues, supervisors, and site management.
