What Does a Silo Manager Do at Senwes Grainlink?

Silo Managers are at the operational heart of Senwes Grainlink. In this role, you will be primarily responsible for effectively managing the handling and storage of grain to maintain product quality and achieve sustainable financial outcomes for the business. You will oversee all silo operations, manage a team, maintain client relationships, and drive market share growth in the grain industry — all while managing the silo’s budget and ensuring compliance with grading and fumigation standards.

This is a senior, multi-disciplinary management role that requires deep grain industry experience, strong leadership skills, and financial acumen in a high-responsibility agricultural environment.


Key Responsibilities of a Silo Manager

Grain Handling & Storage Management

  • Take full responsibility for the safe and efficient handling of all grain received at the silo.
  • Oversee the storage of grain in accordance with quality standards, moisture specifications, and grading requirements.
  • Implement and monitor grain optimisation strategies to minimise losses and maximise storage efficiency.
  • Ensure all grain handling and storage activities comply with relevant industry regulations and Senwes operational procedures.

Grain Optimisation

  • Identify and implement opportunities to optimise grain quality, yield, and storage outcomes.
  • Monitor grain condition continuously and take corrective action to prevent spoilage, infestation, or quality deterioration.
  • Apply fumigation and treatment procedures in accordance with certified protocols and safety regulations.
  • Maintain all relevant grading and fumigation certifications and ensure the silo team is fully compliant.

Market Share Growth & Client Liaison

  • Actively work to grow Senwes Grainlink’s market share in the local grain industry.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with grain producers, clients, and industry stakeholders.
  • Liaise with clients professionally regarding intake, storage, dispatch, and quality queries.
  • Identify new business opportunities and support the regional sales and marketing efforts of the Grainlink division.

Business Plan & Budget Management

  • Manage the silo in accordance with the departmental business plan and strategic objectives.
  • Compile, monitor, and manage the silo’s operational budget to achieve sustainable financial outcomes.
  • Track income, expenses, and variances against budget and report findings to senior management.
  • Implement cost-saving measures without compromising quality, safety, or service delivery.

Staff Management & Development

  • Lead, manage, and develop silo staff to build a high-performing, competent operations team.
  • Provide ongoing coaching, mentoring, and performance feedback to team members.
  • Conduct performance reviews and support staff development in line with Senwes HR policies.
  • Foster a positive, productive, and safety-conscious team culture at the silo.

Financial & Inventory Management

  • Maintain accurate inventory records of all grain received, stored, and dispatched.
  • Perform stock reconciliations and ensure inventory management systems are kept up to date on SAP.
  • Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting in line with company requirements.
  • Manage all financial transactions related to grain intake, storage fees, and client accounts with full accountability.

Minimum Requirements – Silo Manager

To be considered for this Silo Manager position, applicants must meet the following requirements:

Educational Qualifications:

  • National Senior Certificate (Grade 12 / Matric) — minimum requirement
  • All relevant grading and fumigation certificates — essential

Experience:

  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience in the grain industry with a specific focus on grain handling and storage

Skills & Competencies:

  • Proficiency in SAP or a similar ERP / inventory management system
  • Strong financial management skills including budgeting, monitoring, and reporting
  • Solid inventory management experience in a grain or agricultural environment
  • Great leadership, coaching, and mentoring skills — ability to develop and manage a team
  • Strong negotiation skills for client and stakeholder engagement
  • Knowledge of grain grading standards, fumigation procedures, and storage regulations

Legal Requirements:

  • Valid South African ID Document
  • Consumer credit record check will be conducted — this role involves financial management responsibilities

  • Tertiary qualification in Agriculture, Agribusiness, or a related field
