What Does a Mechanic Assistant Do at B-One?

Mechanic Assistants are a vital part of the fleet and equipment maintenance team at B-One. In this role, you will work directly alongside a qualified Mechanic to perform repair work, carry out routine maintenance procedures, and ensure that all vehicles and equipment are kept in safe, roadworthy, and fully operational condition. You will be responsible for lubrication, parts checking, record-keeping, and general facilities and equipment upkeep.

This is a technical, hands-on role that requires a mechanical background, a valid Code 10/12 licence with PDP, and the ability to work accurately and safely in a busy workshop environment.


Key Responsibilities of a Mechanic Assistant

Repair Assistance & Workshop Support

  • Assist the Mechanic in performing all vehicle and equipment repair work as directed.
  • Prepare tools, parts, and equipment required for each repair job before work commences.
  • Support the Mechanic throughout the repair process, including disassembly, component replacement, and reassembly.
  • Follow all workshop safety procedures and manufacturer specifications during repair work.

Lubrication & Routine Maintenance

  • Lubricate vehicles, machinery, and equipment in accordance with scheduled maintenance intervals.
  • Perform routine checks including oil levels, coolant, brake fluid, tyre pressure, and battery condition.
  • Carry out preventative maintenance procedures to minimise unplanned breakdowns and downtime.
  • Identify wear, damage, or deterioration during routine checks and report findings to the Mechanic immediately.

Equipment & Parts Inspection

  • Check equipment, components, and replacement parts for condition, compatibility, and quality before installation.
  • Identify defective, worn, or incorrect parts and set them aside for return or disposal.
  • Assist with sourcing and requisitioning parts and consumables as directed by the Mechanic.

Record Keeping & Administration

  • Maintain accurate records of all repair work, maintenance activities, and parts used.
  • Complete job cards, service checklists, and maintenance logs correctly after every task.
  • Ensure all records are filed and accessible for audit, fleet management, and compliance purposes.

Facilities & Equipment Maintenance

  • Maintain the workshop, tools, and equipment in a clean, safe, and organised condition at all times.
  • Ensure all tools and workshop equipment are correctly stored and accounted for after each job.
  • Report any workshop facility defects, safety hazards, or equipment failures to the supervisor promptly.
  • Assist with general facilities maintenance tasks as required by the operations team.

Minimum Requirements – Mechanic Assistant

To be considered for this Mechanic Assistant position, applicants must meet the following requirements:

Educational Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 / Matric Certificate (NSC) — minimum requirement
  • Relevant tertiary qualification in vehicle maintenance or automotive technology (advantageous)

Licence Requirements:

  • Valid Code 10 or Code 12 driver’s licence — essential
  • Valid Professional Driving Permit (PDP) — essential

Experience:

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a similar mechanic assistant or vehicle maintenance role

Skills & Competencies:

  • Solid mechanical background with working knowledge of vehicle systems and components
  • Auto electrical background and familiarity with electrical fault diagnosis (advantageous)
  • Ability to use hand tools, power tools, and workshop equipment safely and correctly
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in record-keeping and parts checking
  • Reliable, physically fit, and able to work in a workshop environment

Legal Requirements:

  • Valid South African ID Document

Advantageous (Not Essential):

  • Vehicle maintenance or automotive technology certificate (N2/N3 or trade-related)
  • Experience working on heavy commercial vehicles or fleet trucks
