What Does a General Assistant Do at BUCO?
General Assistants are essential to the smooth daily operation of a BUCO branch. In this role, you will be responsible for assisting customers, handling stock, loading and offloading vehicles, and maintaining a clean and safe working environment. You will work across multiple areas of the business unit as operational needs require.
This is a physical, hands-on role that requires energy, a customer-first attitude, and the ability to follow company procedures in a busy retail and yard environment.
Key Responsibilities of a General Assistant
Customer Service & Order Fulfilment
- Provide customers with their orders accurately and efficiently.
- Assist customers and suppliers with queries, directions, and product information.
- Deliver professional, friendly service that upholds the BUCO brand and values.
- Ensure all customer interactions reflect the company’s commitment to service excellence.
Loading, Offloading & Yard Operations
- Assist with the loading and offloading of vehicles delivering or collecting stock.
- Pack yard stock items correctly, safely, and in accordance with the warehouse layout.
- Ensure stock is stored neatly and that yard areas remain organised and hazard-free.
- Handle building materials and hardware products with care to prevent damage or loss.
Vehicle Care & Wash Bay Activities
- Maintain the cleanliness and safekeeping of company vehicles at all times.
- Complete Wash Bay activities as required by the branch operational schedule.
- Report any vehicle defects, damage, or maintenance concerns to the supervisor promptly.
Housekeeping & Branch Organisation
- Keep all branch areas — including the yard, store floor, and wash bay — clean and organised.
- Ensure emergency exits, aisles, and equipment are never obstructed.
- Return materials, equipment, and packaging to their correct storage locations after use.
- Dispose of waste correctly and in line with company policies and procedures.

Minimum Requirements – General Assistant
To be considered for this General Assistant position, applicants must meet the following requirements:
Educational Qualifications:
- Grade 12 / Matric Certificate (NSC) — minimum requirement
Skills & Competencies:
- Basic product knowledge of building materials and hardware (advantageous)
- Physical fitness and ability to perform manual tasks including lifting and loading
- Strong customer service orientation and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Reliable, punctual, and adaptable to operational requirements
Availability Requirements:
