About Premier Cape Town Mill

Premier Foods operates flour milling facilities that process wheat into flour and milled products for South Africa’s food manufacturing and bakery sector. The Cape Town Mill is Premier’s Western Cape milling facility — receiving wheat grain deliveries from agricultural suppliers and processing them into flour products distributed to bakeries, food manufacturers, and retail consumers. The Intake function is the first operational step in the milling process — receiving, sampling, and testing incoming grain before it enters the mill — making the General Worker Intake a critical quality control and operational support role.

Frequently Asked Questions – General Worker Intake Jobs Cape Town

What is the “intake” function in a flour mill? The intake is the receiving and acceptance function of a flour mill — the point at which grain (typically wheat) arrives from agricultural suppliers and is received into the mill’s storage system. Intake responsibilities include checking truck documentation, visually inspecting grain quality and cleanliness, taking representative samples from the load, delivering samples to the quality laboratory for moisture, protein, gluten, and contamination testing, and then offloading approved grain into storage bins. The intake function is the first quality control gate in the milling process — rejected grain never enters production.

What are “chokes” in a mill intake context? In grain handling and milling operations, a “choke” is a blockage in a conveyor, elevator, pipe, or material flow system — where grain or flour accumulates and stops flowing. Chokes can occur in screw conveyors, bucket elevators, downspouts, and any enclosed material handling system. Clearing chokes is a priority task — as blockages stop intake operations and can create safety hazards if pressure builds in enclosed systems. The General Worker Intake must safely and efficiently clear chokes to maintain continuous intake throughput.

What mill knowledge is valued for this role? Mill knowledge includes understanding of grain handling equipment (bucket elevators, screw conveyors, pneumatic conveying systems), grain quality parameters (moisture content, protein level, falling number, gluten strength), intake sampling procedures, cleaning and grading equipment (separators, destoners, scouring machines), food safety requirements for raw grain receipt (HACCP, FSA, FSSC 22000), and the basic milling process flow from intake through tempering, milling, and sifting to flour production. Candidates with any flour mill, grain elevator, or bulk commodity handling experience should highlight this explicitly in their application.

How does this Cape Town Mill post differ from the Aeroton Bakery posts? The Aeroton posts (Operator Divider, Leave Reliever, Storeman Assistant, General Worker Stacker) are all bakery production roles — working with dough, baked goods, and finished bread products. The Cape Town Mill Intake is a flour milling role — working with raw wheat grain before it is ever milled into flour, and before that flour ever reaches a bakery. The two sites represent different stages in Premier’s food supply chain: the mill produces flour; the bakery transforms flour into bread.
