Purpose of the Role
The General Assistant is responsible for delivering exceptional customer service through accurate and prompt loading of customer vehicles, delivery trucks, and transfer trucks — ensuring efficient yard operations, correct stock counting and stacking, stock pulling for branch transfers, bagging of stone and sand, housekeeping, and reporting stock shortages and breakages — so that no stock losses occur and all customers and drivers leave satisfied.
Key Responsibilities – General Assistant
Loading & Despatch
- Load customer vehicles, delivery trucks, and transfer trucks promptly and accurately — ensuring every load is correctly counted, correctly packed, and despatched without error or delay.
- Ensure stock is properly stacked and counted during loading — preventing loading errors, damaged goods, and short deliveries.
- Assist with pulling stock for branch transfers — picking and staging transfer stock accurately and efficiently.
Bagging & Bulk Materials
- Perform bagging of stone and sand — filling, tying, and staging bagged aggregates and bulk materials for customer and delivery vehicle loading.
Stock Management & Reporting
- Report stock shortages to management — flagging inventory gaps that could affect despatch operations or customer orders.
- Report stock breakages — ensuring all damaged goods are correctly recorded and removed from saleable stock.
- Participate in perpetual stocktakes — contributing to the DC’s ongoing inventory accuracy.
Customer Service
- Assist customers with excellent customer service and basic product knowledge — ensuring every customer interaction at the despatch point is professional, helpful, and satisfying.
- Ensure the yard runs efficiently — contributing to a service standard that keeps customers returning to Brights Hardware.
Housekeeping
- Uphold tidiness and cleanliness of the work area — sweeping and maintaining good housekeeping standards throughout the despatch department.
- Perform any work-related tasks as delegated by the superior.
Minimum Requirements – General Assistant
Qualifications
- Matric or equivalent — essential
