About Air Force Base Langebaanweg
Air Force Base Langebaanweg is located near the town of Langebaan on the West Coast of the Western Cape — approximately 120km north of Cape Town. It is home to the Central Flying School (CFS) — the South African Air Force’s primary pilot training base, where student pilots earn their wings. As an active pilot training facility, AFB Langebaanweg’s runways, taxiways, and hardstands experience intensive daily use by training aircraft — making their maintenance to aviation quality standards a direct flight safety priority. The Road Workers Aid team is the frontline of this critical airfield infrastructure maintenance function.
AFB Langebaanweg currently has two posts published on this site — these Road Workers Aid (x5, Level 02, ABET) posts and the Registry Clerk Production (x2, Level 05, Grade 12) posts — making it the only West Coast SAAF base with multiple simultaneous vacancies in the current DOD batch.
Purpose of the Role
The Road Workers Aid is responsible for maintaining and repairing runways, taxiways, hardstands, compass swing bays, and engine running bays at AFB Langebaanweg — performing serviceability inspections, sweeping airfield surfaces, ensuring safe maintenance environments for deeper-level work, and supporting the investigation of new technology and equipment — all to the aviation quality standards required by an active SAAF pilot training base.

- Ensure the maintenance and repair of runways, taxiways, and hardstands in accordance with aviation quality standards — maintaining all airfield surfaces in the safe, serviceable condition required for daily pilot training operations at the Central Flying School.
- Sweep runways, taxiways, and hardstands — removing foreign object debris (FOD), loose material, and surface hazards that could damage training aircraft during take-off, landing, and taxiing.
Compass Swing Bay & Engine Running Bay Maintenance
- Ensure a safe environment with the necessary infrastructure to carry out deeper level maintenance on all compass swing bays and engine running bays — maintaining these specialist aviation facilities in the condition required to support aircraft maintenance and testing at the CFS.
Technology & Equipment Investigation

Frequently Asked Questions – Road Workers Aid AFB Langebaanweg
How does this Road Workers Aid post differ from the AFB Makhado Road Workers Aid post? Both posts are Level 02, ABET-qualified, no-experience permanent government positions with identical duties and salary — maintaining runways, taxiways, hardstands, compass swing bays, and engine running bays to aviation quality standards. The key difference is operational context and location: the AFB Makhado post serves a frontline fighter base in the Limpopo Soutpansberg; the AFB Langebaanweg posts (5 positions) serve the Central Flying School — South Africa’s pilot training base — on the scenic West Coast of the Western Cape. Candidates who are geographically mobile are encouraged to consider applying for both.
What is the Central Flying School (CFS) at Langebaanweg? The Central Flying School is the South African Air Force’s primary pilot training facility — where student pilots undergo their initial and advanced flying training before receiving their wings and progressing to operational squadrons. The CFS operates a fleet of training aircraft that use Langebaanweg’s runways intensively throughout the year. This high-frequency training activity makes the airfield maintenance function — and the Road Workers Aid team that performs it — operationally critical to the SAAF’s pilot pipeline.
What is FOD and why is it especially important at a pilot training base? Foreign Object Debris (FOD) — stones, metal fragments, loose aggregate, or any other material on the airfield surface — poses a serious risk of engine ingestion, tyre damage, or airframe strike to aircraft during operations. At a pilot training base like Langebaanweg, where student pilots are flying multiple training sorties per day and may be less experienced at handling emergency situations, FOD-free runways and taxiways are a particularly critical safety priority. The Road Workers Aid’s regular, thorough sweeping of all airfield surfaces is a direct flight safety function.
Is the Langebaan area affordable for government employees on a Level 02 salary? The Langebaan and Saldanha Bay municipal area on the West Coast is significantly more affordable than Cape Town — with lower rental costs, a quieter lifestyle, and good community infrastructure including schools, clinics, and shops. Government employees at Level 02 in Langebaan are generally able to live comfortably in the town or surrounding West Coast communities. The enquiries contact (Maj M.L. Du Plessis at (022) 705 2515) can advise on any government housing or transport arrangements that may be available for appointed candidates.
The SAAF College Registry Clerk post also lists AFB Langebaanweg as the application address — is that post at this base too? Yes — the Registry Clerk Production post (Ref: SAAFCOL/02/08/26/02, x2 posts, Level 05, Grade 12) lists SA Air Force College, Pretoria as the centre but AFB Langebaanweg as the application address — a discrepancy flagged in that post. Candidates interested in both a Road Workers Aid role and a Registry Clerk role at Langebaanweg should apply for each separately and confirm the exact work location with Maj M.L. Du Plessis or WO2 V.A. Faro at (022) 705 2515 / 2571.
