Purpose of the Role
The SHE Officer is responsible for working with key stakeholders across the business to promote a strong SHE culture and to co-ordinate all Safety, Health, and Environmental projects and governance activities. The role aligns Time Square’s unit operations with Sun International’s Business Unit Strategy, applicable legislative requirements, and national and international regulatory standards — including ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001.
This is a consultative, administrative, and reporting function spanning multiple departments, requiring both technical SHE expertise and the stakeholder management skills to influence behaviour and drive compliance across a large, diverse workforce.
Key Responsibilities – SHE Officer
SHE Compliance
- Compile and maintain control standards, checklists, and tools for use across the business in line with all applicable SHE legislative and regulatory requirements.
- Collaborate with business areas to identify and evaluate SHE risks, hazardous conditions, and unsafe practices within all operational areas.
- Conduct and co-ordinate on-site inspections and checks across various operational areas to audit physical conditions and safe work practices in line with regulatory requirements.
- Maintain comprehensive SHE legislative registers, ensuring full alignment with current regulatory requirements at all times.
- Co-ordinate regular internal and external SHE audits against applicable standards and ensure all relevant preparation is completed ahead of audit dates.
- Complete all required SHE administration and documentation, updating both physical and electronic records in full compliance with ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 requirements.
- Organise, form, and educate SHE teams on requirements, regulations, and best practices.
- Complete reports, minutes, presentations, and departmental documents from SHE Committee meetings accurately and timeously.
- Follow up on and measure the implementation of all SHE recommendations and remedial actions to ensure closure within agreed timelines.
Incident Investigation & Reporting
- Investigate and prepare detailed reports on all accidents and incidents that occur within Time Square’s operational areas.
- Facilitate the compilation of all required incident and accident documentation in line with legislative and company requirements.
- Communicate all incidents and accidents to the necessary internal stakeholders via the Non-Conformance system timeously and accurately.
- Update the SHE management system with all incident data, investigation outcomes, and corrective actions implemented.
SHE Project Co-ordination
- Co-ordinate schedules, action plans, and resources for all SHE projects and initiatives aimed at improving and maintaining safety and environmental standards.
- Communicate SHE objectives and implementation plans to business operations, providing the tools, ideas, and support needed for effective execution.
- Facilitate all preparation and logistics for SHE projects and initiatives prior to implementation.
- Participate actively in the execution of projects and initiatives, ensuring physical presence during implementation phases.
- Record all project-related information, documentation, and expenditure accurately and file according to Sun International’s standards.
- Report regularly on progress, successes, challenges, and lessons learned across all active SHE projects.
SHE Reporting & Analytics
- Compile comprehensive reports on SHE initiatives, incidents, and statistics across the business unit and contribute to Group-level SHE reporting.
- Analyse and review statistics relating to absenteeism, occupational health risks, and injury reports to identify trends and areas of concern.
- Recommend and implement preventative actions to minimise future risk based on statistical analysis and incident trends.
- Identify and escalate all non-conformances in line with applicable Acts, Regulations, and company policy.
Stakeholder Relationship Management
- Maintain regular communication with all business areas and SHE Committees within Time Square’s operations to gather relevant data and inform SHE decisions.
- Communicate SHE objectives, standards, procedures, and initiatives to all internal stakeholders clearly and consistently.
- Provide timely feedback on all non-conformance issues to management with supporting evidence and recommended actions.
- Serve as the primary contact point for external SHE auditors during all formal SHE audits within the business unit.
Minimum Requirements – SHE Officer
Educational Qualifications
- Grade 12 (Matric) — required
- Certification in Environmental Management (ISO 14001 / IEMA) — required
- Certification in Health and Safety Management (ISO 18001 / OHSAS 18001) — required
- 3-Year B Degree in Occupational Health & Safety or Environmental Management — advantageous
Work Experience
- Minimum 3 years of experience in occupational health and safety and/or environmental management — essential
- Exposure to the gaming and hospitality industry SHE requirements is a strong advantage
Technical Systems & Tools
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
