Mechanical Engineering Artisan Role – Siqalo Foods Division
RCL Foods is seeking a qualified Boiler House Fitter Artisan to join the Siqalo Foods Division based in Boksburg, Gauteng. This permanent engineering role reports directly to the Site Services Lead and forms part of the company’s Engineering function.
The purpose of this role is to provide multidisciplinary engineering and operational skills to ensure that general maintenance is carried out effectively within prescribed guidelines. The Boiler House Fitter Artisan will be responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing machinery, equipment, and fixtures, ensuring all work is conducted in accordance with relevant codes of practice and standards.

Purpose of the Role
The Boiler House Fitter Artisan is responsible for ensuring efficient and cost-effective maintenance of mechanical equipment and machinery within the assigned area of responsibility.
The role focuses on installing, assembling, testing, inspecting, and maintaining equipment using hand tools and power tools. Maintenance activities must be completed in line with legislative requirements, safety standards, and internal maintenance procedures.
The position supports plant reliability, operational efficiency, and compliance with safety, hygiene, and food safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
The artisan will manage day-to-day activities within the boiler house environment while working collaboratively with boiler operators and fellow artisans.
The role requires managing scheduled maintenance tasks by participating in planned maintenance activities and executing them according to plant requirements. Planned maintenance schedules must be used to coordinate daily activities.
Machine drawings must be interpreted and understood to improve performance and reduce downtime. The artisan must give input into feasibility studies for projects and contribute to annual factory shutdown planning.
Maintenance responsibilities include assembling, installing, testing, inspecting, and maintaining mechanical systems. Proactive inspections must be conducted to identify potential faults before breakdowns occur.
Fault finding must be performed using appropriate tools and diagnostic techniques. The artisan must interpret problems, optimise production output, and carry out plant repairs with urgency.
Root Cause Analysis tools such as Fishbone and 5 Why must be used when completing work orders. The role includes participating in strategic engineering plans to drive breakdown reduction and continuous improvement initiatives.
Recommendations for continuous improvement must be made, and participation in WCM activities is required. Major engineering losses in the area must be identified and investigated using Kaizen problem-solving methodologies.
The artisan must communicate outstanding job cards to the Engineering Superintendent and Engineering Maintenance Planner.
Tool management is a critical responsibility. Power tools, hand tools, and maintenance equipment must be monitored, kept in good working condition, and stored safely. Broken tools must be reported immediately. The tool register must be updated, and all tools must remain secure.
General workshop maintenance, store maintenance, cleaning of premises after maintenance, and adherence to 5S housekeeping principles are mandatory. Unused items must be removed from operating areas and stored correctly.
The role includes performing risk assessments within the area of responsibility, maintaining a safe working environment, and adhering to SHEQ policies, HACCP requirements, and company procedures at all times.
The artisan must demonstrate effective teamwork and self-management by taking ownership of tasks, prioritising work effectively, and ensuring productivity and quality standards are consistently maintained.
Minimum Requirements
Completed N3 and relevant Mechanical Trade Test
Minimum 5 years’ experience
Experience with boilers, pumps, and conveyors will be advantageous
Valid driver’s license
Willingness to perform standby duties
Willingness to respond promptly to call-outs
Willingness to work outside normal working hours
Welding training will be an advantage
Technical and Professional Skills
Professional presentation and conduct within the working environment
Ability to think creatively and solve problems
Ability to monitor machines and perform repairs using technical skills
Strong technical and analytical capability
Excellent communication skills
Ability to make quick and decisive decisions considering food safety, hygiene standards, and safety of personnel and equipment
Experience working with internal stakeholders including Site Services Lead, Boiler Operators, Process Engineers, Instrumentation Artisans, Maintenance Leads, Maintenance Planners, Plant Controllers, and Engineering Store Supervisors
Experience engaging with external contractors and suppliers
