Health and Safety Officer Role in Sasol Mining Operations

Purpose of the Role
The SHE Occupational Safety Officer is responsible for coordinating health and safety activities across operations. The role focuses on facilitating inspections, data gathering, data maintenance, and integrating health and safety initiatives into Sasol’s operations to maintain a safe and healthy working environment.
The position plays a key role in proactive hazard identification, incident investigation, compliance monitoring, and continuous improvement of safety systems within the mining environment.
Key Accountabilities
The successful candidate will ensure effective delivery of safety targets through proactive monitoring and response to hazards in the workplace.
The role includes conducting hazard identification activities and facilitating safety-related risk assessments. The Safety Officer will lead incident investigations and facilitate Root Cause Analyses (RCAs) to improve workplace safety performance.
Participation in shutdown planning and safety campaigns is required, as well as conducting ad hoc Service Provider audits to ensure compliance with SHE file requirements.
The SHE Occupational Safety Officer will participate in safety system audits, including logbook audits, lock-out audits, legal appointment audits, and insurance engineer audits.
Providing input during risk assessments to ensure safety issues are identified and addressed is a critical function of the role.
The position requires advising on the selection and proper use of specific Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and participating in relevant safety forums.
The Safety Officer will support the rollout of the Safety Improvement Plan and report updates as required.
Coaching and supporting team members in relation to safety practices and compliance is expected, while ensuring personal and team development remains aligned to performance contracts and quality standards.
The role includes managing ad hoc safety-related requests and contributing to the review and development of policies, standards, and procedures.
The incumbent will identify, evaluate, and recommend improvement opportunities within the safety framework.
Contribution to the compilation of new safety procedures and the revision of existing safety instructions is required to maintain operational compliance and safety excellence.
Minimum Qualifications
Grade 12 with Mathematics, Physical Science, and English is required.
A SAMTRAC Certificate is mandatory.
A National Diploma or B Tech in Safety Management is required.
A valid Driver’s License is required.
Experience Requirements
A minimum of 6 or more years of relevant working experience in a safety management or occupational health and safety environment is required.

Strong capability to integrate SHE requirements into business plans and operational procedures.
Understanding of operational and safety factors within a mining or industrial environment.
Ability to manage complexity and align safety plans with operational objectives.

Ability to organise resources and manage SHE responsibilities effectively.
