Purpose of the Role

The Maintenance Operator Mechanical supports the Mechanical Maintenance team by providing effective equipment maintenance assistance and reliability while adhering to procedures and codes. The role focuses on increasing equipment stability and maintaining the sustainability of plant operations.

The successful candidate will work closely with supervisors, maintenance teams, and customers to ensure equipment reliability, safe working practices, and continuous improvement across the plant environment.

Key Responsibilities

The Maintenance Operator Gr 2 Mechanical will apply and maintain safety within the working environment at all times. Safety adherence is a core responsibility of the role.

The incumbent participates in root cause analyses (RCA) and provides feedback to RCA teams to improve plant reliability and prevent recurring failures.

All maintenance work must be carried out according to planning schedules. The role includes participating in daily morning meetings to discuss work assignments and priorities.

Regular feedback must be provided to the supervisor regarding work progress and completion status. Communication with internal customers is also required to ensure transparency and alignment.

The role requires strict adherence to safety standards, codes, and waste disposal procedures. Good housekeeping practices must be maintained at all times.

The Maintenance Operator identifies faults using applicable diagnostic methods to ensure maximum equipment availability. Plant inspections and necessary repairs must be performed to ensure reliability and operational stability.

Attendance at toolbox talks, PDAs, and RCAs is required to improve plant safety and operational stability.

The incumbent must conduct My IMS inspections to maintain and improve plant sustainability and ensure that accurate maintenance history feedback is captured to support renewals, upgrades, and critical spares replacement.

Continuous improvement opportunities within the assigned work area must be identified and acted upon where appropriate.

The role also includes attending training courses and seminars as outlined in the training matrix to enhance competency and skills. Personal training and development needs must be identified and incorporated into a Personal Development Plan (PDP) with group leader approval.

Minimum Qualifications

Matric or N3 qualification with Mathematics, English, and Physical Science is required.

CHIETA NQF Level 2 (Mechanical) qualification is required.

A valid driver’s licence is required.

Experience Requirements

Applicants must have 1 to 2 or more years of relevant working experience in a mechanical maintenance environment.

Experience within an industrial or plant maintenance setting will be advantageous.

The successful candidate must demonstrate effective communication skills and the ability to manage complexity within a technical environment.

Strong analytical ability to analyse alternatives and recommend solutions is required.

Technical troubleshooting capability and equipment utilisation skills are essential.

The candidate must demonstrate quality decision-making, accountability, and action orientation.

Strong planning and organisational skills are required to manage daily maintenance activities efficiently.

The role requires the ability to implement engineering solutions effectively and contribute to overall plant performance.
