Employer and Duty Station
The Department of Correctional Services invites suitably qualified and committed individuals to apply for X381 Security Officer posts within the Free State and Northern Cape Region, stationed at the Mangaung Maximum Correctional Centre. These appointments are made in terms of the Correctional Service Act and form part of the Department’s ongoing commitment to maintaining secure, safe, and humane correctional facilities while advancing offender rehabilitation and human development.

Salary Structure
Successful candidates will be appointed at one of the following Correctional Band (CB1) levels, depending on experience and eligibility:

CB1-1: R212 358 per annum
-
CB1-2: R257 895 per annum
-
CB1-3: R313 521 per annum
Salaries are payable in accordance with public service regulations and may include applicable benefits as determined by the Department of Correctional Services.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements to be considered:

Matric / Grade 12 qualification
-
Successful completion of one of the following:
-
Correctional Science Learnership
-
Basic Training
-
Induction Training Course (ITC)
-
Experience Requirements by Level
-
CB1-1: No previous experience required
-
CB1-2: A minimum of 10 years relevant experience at CB1-1 level
-
CB1-3: A minimum of 10 years relevant experience at CB1-2 level
Candidates must meet the experience requirements relevant to the level they are applying for. Failure to meet the stipulated experience criteria will result in disqualification.
Competencies and Personal Attributes
Applicants must demonstrate the following competencies and attributes, which are essential for effective performance in a maximum correctional environment:

Knowledge of relevant correctional legislation, policies, and procedures

Knowledge of Minimum-Security Standards for correctional centres
Candidates must also demonstrate integrity, emotional resilience, discipline, and the ability to work under pressure within a high-security operational setting.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Successful candidates will be required to perform a wide range of security and operational duties, including but not limited to the following:

Performing access control at the correctional centre and between internal sections
-
Controlling and monitoring the movement of inmates within the correctional centre
-
Escorting and guarding inmates during external movements to public institutions
-
Guarding inmates within correctional facilities in line with security protocols
-
Conducting physical security inspections to ensure compliance with safety and security standards
-
Managing and controlling stores, firearms, and security equipment
-
Operating and managing the security control room
-
Monitoring surveillance systems and responding to security incidents
-
Ensuring the safe, secure, and humane detention of offenders
-
Supporting offender rehabilitation through correction and human development initiatives
These duties require constant vigilance, adherence to procedures, and a strong sense of responsibility toward public safety and institutional integrity.

Selection and Appointment Process
