About the Role

The Financial Accountant (Project Lead) is accountable for ensuring that all financial accounting transactions are accurately and efficiently recorded within the financial results of the organisation. The role focuses on maintaining the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of financial records while supporting financial decision-making through analysis and interpretation of data.

This position plays a key role in reviewing financial results, performing balance sheet reconciliations, and ensuring that all balance sheet values are fully substantiated. The Financial Accountant is expected to identify discrepancies, investigate variances, and ensure that corrective actions are implemented where required.

In addition to core accounting responsibilities, the role requires providing technical accounting guidance and subject matter expertise to colleagues and business stakeholders. The Project Lead element of the role involves supporting projects, portfolios, or functional areas by applying accounting knowledge, system understanding, and analytical insight to improve financial outcomes and controls.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Accounting and Transaction Processing

The successful candidate will ensure that financial accounting transactions are recorded accurately and in line with accounting standards and internal controls. This includes executing a wide range of accounting functions across financial reporting cycles.

The role requires maintaining discipline in transaction processing to ensure that financial results are reliable, complete, and reflective of underlying business activity.

Financial Review and Analysis

The Financial Accountant will review and analyse financial results to ensure accuracy, completeness, and consistency. This includes identifying trends, variances, and anomalies in financial data and providing clear explanations and insights to stakeholders.

Strong analytical skills are essential, as the role involves working with large volumes of financial data and interpreting results in a meaningful and efficient manner.

Balance Sheet Reconciliations and Substantiation

A core responsibility of the role is performing and reviewing balance sheet reconciliations. This includes ensuring that all balance sheet accounts are comprehensively substantiated, supported by appropriate documentation, and compliant with accounting standards.

The role requires investigating reconciling items, resolving discrepancies, and ensuring timely clearance of outstanding items to maintain balance sheet integrity.

Technical Accounting and Subject Matter Expertise

The Financial Accountant (Project Lead) is expected to provide technical accounting guidance and oversight within assigned portfolios, functions, or departments. This includes advising on accounting treatments, interpreting accounting standards, and supporting compliance with IFRS, GAAP, and internal accounting policies.

Systems and Process Support

The Financial Accountant is expected to use Microsoft Office tools effectively, particularly Excel, to analyse data, prepare reports, and support financial reviews.

Project and Stakeholder Support

As a Project Lead, the role involves supporting financial projects and initiatives by applying accounting knowledge, analytical skills, and system expertise. This includes collaborating with internal stakeholders, providing financial insights, and ensuring that accounting considerations are addressed during project implementation.

Minimum Requirements

Candidates applying for this role must meet the following requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting with a focus on Financial Accounting

  • Completed SAICA or SAIPA articles

  • Clear criminal and credit record

Experience and Professional Background

  • 0–2 years post-articles experience in financial accounting

  • Exposure to balance sheet reconciliations and financial analysis

  • Experience within a banking or financial services environment will be advantageous

Qualifications (Ideal or Preferred)

  • Honours Degree in Accounting – Financial Accounting

  • Exposure to SAP accounting systems

  • Prior experience within Capitec Bank will be advantageous
