Role Overview
The Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting blood and other specimens for clinical analysis, evaluation, and diagnostic purposes. The role requires strict adherence to standard operating procedures, ethical guidelines, and infection control measures to ensure reliable test results and patient safety.
In addition to specimen collection, the position involves patient education, specimen dispatch, record keeping, stock control, and supporting laboratory and clinical operations across various collection points.
Key Responsibilities
Specimen Collection and Patient Care
The successful candidate will ensure that patients and clients are correctly identified prior to specimen collection and are fully informed about the procedure and their rights in accordance with standard operating procedures and scope of practice.
Blood and non-blood specimens, including body fluids, tissue, and excretions, must be collected using correct sterile equipment and appropriate techniques to ensure sample integrity and accurate diagnostic outcomes. This may include the use of Point of Care biomedical instrumentation systems and rapid testing kits where applicable.
The Phlebotomist is required to observe patients’ physical condition during awareness and apply sound first aid practices to ensure patient comfort and safety at all times.
Specimen Handling, Dispatch, and Documentation
The role includes maintaining accurate records of all specimens collected and ensuring that patient details and clinical information are captured correctly on laboratory information systems.
Specimens must be dispatched for processing in accordance with prescribed standard operating procedures. The Phlebotomist is responsible for monitoring specimen progress, handling related queries, and supporting report delivery within required turnaround times.
Infection Control, Safety, and Housekeeping
The successful candidate must ensure that all bio-hazardous waste is disposed of correctly in compliance with safety protocols and relevant legislation. Sound housekeeping procedures must be implemented to maintain a clean, safe, and compliant working environment.
The role includes ongoing adherence to infection control measures and participation, where delegated, in internal and external quality control audits to maintain laboratory standards.
Stock Control and Resource Management
The Phlebotomist is responsible for monitoring stock levels of all specimen collection materials, including venesection bleeding bags, and ordering additional stock to ensure uninterrupted service delivery.
Ensuring availability and proper storage of collection materials is critical to maintaining operational efficiency and patient care standards.
Professional Interaction and Support Services
The position requires representing the organisation professionally and ethically when interacting with patients, clients, doctors, pathologists, and hospital staff.
The Phlebotomist may be required to assist pathologists with special procedures such as bone marrows, fine needle aspirates, sweat tests, and pap smears, in accordance with approved instructions and standard operating procedures.
Knowledge of HIV and AIDS is required to provide pre-test information and patient support where applicable.
Administrative and Financial Responsibilities
The role includes receiving cash from patients and ensuring that all monies are banked in accordance with prescribed procedures.
The Phlebotomist must report incidents, log customer complaints, document problem resolutions, and action tasks on the laboratory information management system in line with organisational policies.
Minimum Requirements
To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following requirements:

Registration in the relevant discipline with HPCSA or SANC

Valid driver’s license

0–2 years relevant working experience
