Role Summary
The Receptionist Dental Assistant is a multi-skilled professional responsible for the seamless operation of the dental department. You will alternate between providing chairside assistance to Dental Practitioners and managing the front-desk reception. From sterilizing specialized instruments to navigating medical scheme authorizations and patient billing, you will be the backbone of the patient journey at Roodepoort Medicross.
Key Work Output and Accountabilities
1. Clinical Dental Chair Assistant Oversight

Surgery Preparation: Prepare the dental surgery area daily and between each patient visit, ensuring a sterile and welcoming environment.

Instrument Sterilization: Clean and autoclave instruments according to strict infection control protocols. You will be responsible for oiling and cleaning both manual and electric handpieces after each use.

Chairside Assistance: Assist the Dentist by passing the correct instruments timeously. Perform suctioning, mix materials (amalgam, composites, cement), and prepare sterile trays.

Radiography: Develop X-rays and load Digital Imaging plates for scanning where applicable.

Stock Management: Monitor and order dental consumables to prevent shortages during procedures.
2. Dental Receptionist & Administrative Oversight

Patient Admissions: Manage patient arrivals professionally, assisting with documentation and ensuring compliance with Standard Operating Procedures.

Financial Management: Accurately record medical and personal information on the system. Inform patients of outstanding balances or levies and validate details on switch applications.

Billing & Scheduling: Ensure patients are correctly billed after visits and schedule follow-up appointments or specialist referrals as requested by practitioners.

Telephonic Etiquette: Manage the switchboard professionally, recording messages and transferring calls to the appropriate staff members.
3. Best and Safest Practice

Emergency Handling: Identify medical emergencies and immediately refer or transport patients to the nursing station for stabilization and handover.

Medical Waste: Ensure chemistry and clinical waste are discarded strictly according to Medical Waste Protocols.

Infection Control: Maintain high standards of hygiene and IPC (Infection Prevention Control) in line with company policies.
Skills Profile & Requirements
Education & Registration (Required)

Grade 12: Matric or equivalent NQF level 4 qualification.

Dental Qualification: A recognized qualification in Dental Assisting.

HPCSA Registration: Must be currently registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Dental Assistant.
Experience & Knowledge

Work Experience: 2–3 years of experience as a Dental Assistant in a clinic environment.

Technical Skills: Intermediate proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Industry Software: Experience with SAP, ME+, and dental billing procedures is highly required.

Scheme Knowledge: Good understanding of Medical Schemes and scales of benefits.
Working Conditions

Flexibility: This role requires professional flexibility in working hours to support daily operations, which may include weekend shifts.

Physical Requirements: The role involves standing for extended periods during clinical procedures and managing the physical flow of the dental department.
