Role Purpose
The Pharmacist Intern role at Netcare is designed to provide comprehensive, practical experience under the supervision of a registered Pharmacist. You will be involved in the full spectrum of pharmaceutical services, from clinical ward rounds and high-tech oncology preparation to retail dispensing and stock management. This internship is an opportunity to develop professional excellence while contributing to the “Netcare Way” of compassionate, patient-centered care.
Key Work Output and Accountabilities
Operational Excellence & Dispensing

Prescription Processing: Dispensing of hospital and retail prescriptions under supervision, including accurate capturing and labelling.

Clinical Advice: Advise patients and healthcare teams on drug usage, side effects, contra-indications, and drug interactions.

Specialized Preparation: Assist with the control and preparation of oncology drugs, TPN (Total Parenteral Nutrition), and the compounding of sterile and non-sterile medicines.

Primary Healthcare: Provide information on general health matters, including immunisation, mother and child health, and family planning.
Cost & Event Management

Efficiency Monitoring: Actively monitor and reduce “Cost Per Event” within the hospital, ensuring duration of treatment and generic substitution policies are followed.

Public Health Awareness: Plan and implement health campaigns such as Heart Week, Pharmacy Week, and Breast Awareness campaigns.

Generic Optimization: Focus on increasing the usage of high-quality generic products to ensure cost-effective care.
Logistic Functions & Stock Control

Inventory Management: Supervise the acquisition, storage, and handling of medicines to ensure safety and quality.

Stock Checks: Participate in cyclical counts and full stock takes, maintaining dedicated areas for organization and expiry date monitoring.

Collaboration: Update doctors and nursing staff regarding out-of-stock situations and offer appropriate therapeutic alternatives.
Pharmaceutical Evaluation & Research

Clinical Audits: Conduct monthly pharmaceutical audits in allocated wards to ensure the best and safest product usage.

Information Services: Utilize Drug Information Centres (e.g., Pharmnet Amayeza) and research databases (e.g., PubMed, MEDLINE) to provide evidence-based advice to the medical team.
Skills Profile
Education (Essential)

B.Pharm Degree: Completed Bachelor of Pharmacy degree.

SAPC Registration: Current registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) as a Pharmacist Intern.
Knowledge & Skills (Preferred)

IT Literacy: Intermediate computer proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Netcare Standards: Familiarity with standard hospital pharmacy concepts and practices.
