TB SUPPORT OFFICERS (30 POSITIONS): AMATHOLE DISTRICT

AQUITY Innovations NPC, a principal Sub-Recipient of the Global Fund, is recruiting 30 TB Support Officers to support the National Department of Healthโ€™s TB project. These positions are based across the Amathole District, specifically serving the Mnquma, Mbashe, Amahlathi, and Raymond Mhlaba sub-districts. This is a long-term contract opportunity aimed at identifying, supporting, and retaining TB patients within the healthcare system until 2028.

Role Purpose

The TB Support Officer serves as the frontline heart of the Global Fund TB Project. Your mission is to close the gap between the community and clinics by conducting active TB case-finding and providing essential support to those already on treatment. This role requires a high level of empathy and physical activity, as you will be conducting door-to-door outreaches and tracing patients who have missed appointments in both rural and semi-urban settings. By facilitating early diagnosis and consistent treatment adherence, you will play a direct role in saving lives within the Amathole District.


Key Performance Areas & Responsibilities

1. Community Screening & Case Finding

  • Active Screening: Conduct TB screening and specimen collection (sputum) for close contacts of confirmed TB patients and other high-risk community members.

  • Door-to-Door Outreach: Execute systematic house visits to identify individuals with TB symptoms who have not yet sought medical help.

  • Demand Creation: Work alongside Mobile DCXR (Digital Chest X-Ray) units to encourage community members to utilize mobile screening services.

2. Adherence Support & Patient Care

  • Counselling & Education: Provide detailed patient education to help individuals and their families understand the importance of finishing TB treatment.

  • Adherence Clubs: Facilitate and support adherence clubs to ensure patients remain in care and feel supported by their peers.

  • Patient Tracing: Actively trace TB patients and other individuals who have missed scheduled clinic appointments to bring them back into the care loop.

3. Referrals & M&E Reporting

  • Clinical Referrals: Ensure that any household contacts who test positive or show severe symptoms are referred and successfully linked to the nearest clinic.

  • Digital Reporting: Capture all daily field activities accurately using mobile devices and provided Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) tools.

  • Accountability: Report daily to the Supervisor regarding targets reached and challenges faced in the field.


Qualification & Experience Requirements

To qualify for one of the 30 positions in the Amathole District, candidates must possess:

  • Education: Grade 12 (Matric) or an equivalent qualification.

  • Advantage: Certification as a Community Health Care Worker (CHW).

  • Experience: * Proven experience in health promotion and health education.

    • Demonstrated ability to use mobile devices for data capturing.

    • Previous experience in community-based counselling is highly preferred.

  • Skills: * Strong verbal and written communication skills (English and isiXhosa are essential for this region).

    • Excellent interpersonal and conflict-resolution skills.

    • The ability to work independently in remote areas while remaining a loyal team player.

Knowledge, Skills & Competencies

  • Problem Solving: Ability to identify barriers to treatment and suggest solutions for patients.

  • Empathy: A non-judgmental and trustworthy personality is critical for household visits.

  • Resilience: The ability to work in a demanding field environment to meet project goals through 2028.
