TB SUPPORT OFFICERS (32 POSITIONS): BUFFALO CITY METRO

AQUITY Innovations NPC, a principal Sub-Recipient of the Global Fund, is recruiting 32 TB Support Officers to join our team in the Eastern Cape. These positions will be strategically based across the Buffalo City Metro (BCM), specifically serving the East London and KWT/Bhisho sub-districts. This is a long-term contract opportunity aligned with the National Department of Healthโ€™s mission to end TB in South Africa.

Role Purpose

The TB Support Officer is the vital link between the community and formal healthcare facilities. Your primary mission is to increase TB case finding, support patient adherence, and conduct essential screening in high-risk environments. This role requires extensive field work, including door-to-door visits and community outreach. You will be at the forefront of the Global Fund TB Project, ensuring that those affected by TB are identified early, linked to care, and supported throughout their treatment journey.


Key Performance Areas & Responsibilities

1. Community Screening & Specimen Collection

  • Active Case Finding: Conduct TB screening and specimen collection (sputum) for close contacts of confirmed TB patients and other high-risk groups.

  • Door-to-Door Outreach: Execute house-to-house visits to identify symptomatic individuals who may not have accessed a clinic.

  • Mobile Support: Assist Mobile DCXR (Digital Chest X-Ray) outreach teams to create demand for screening services in the BCM area.

2. Patient Adherence & Support

  • Counselling: Provide high-quality patient education and counselling to help families understand TB transmission and treatment.

  • Adherence Clubs: Support local adherence clubs to ensure TB patients stay on their medication and remain in the care system.

  • Loss to Follow-Up Tracing: Actively trace individuals and TB patients who have missed their clinic appointments to bring them back into treatment.

3. Referrals & Reporting

  • Clinical Linkage: Refer household contacts who test positive or appear ill to the nearest healthcare facility for immediate intervention.

  • Data Capturing: Use mobile devices and M&E (Monitoring and Evaluation) tools to capture all daily activities and outreach stats.

  • Daily Reporting: Provide consistent daily updates to the Project Supervisor regarding field challenges and successes.


Qualification & Experience Requirements

To be considered for one of the 32 positions in Buffalo City Metro, you must meet the following:

  • Education: Grade 12 (Matric) or an equivalent qualification.

  • Certification: Certification as a Community Health Care Worker (CHW) will be a significant advantage.

  • Experience: * Proven experience in health promotion and health education.

    • Demonstrated ability to operate a mobile device for data entry.

    • Experience in community-based counselling and support.

  • Skills: * Excellent verbal and written communication skills (English and isiXhosa preferred).

    • Strong interpersonal and counselling skills.

    • Ability to work independently in the field and as part of a larger outreach team.

Knowledge, Skills & Competencies

  • Problem Solving: Ability to navigate community challenges and find solutions for patient barriers to care.

  • Conflict Management: Skills to handle sensitive situations within households and communities.

  • Reliability: Ability to work consistently toward targets until the contract end date in 2028.
