Role Purpose

The Trainee Manager at New Brighton is a strategic partner to the Store Manager. Your mission is to assist in the implementation of the Store Business Plan, ensuring all operations align with the broader company strategy. You will be groomed to handle the full spectrum of retail management—from financial accounting and asset control to Human Resources and OHSA compliance. This role requires a leader who can thrive under pressure, manage complex administrative tasks, and inspire a team to exceed sales budgets and customer audit benchmarks.


Key Performance Areas & Responsibilities

1. Strategic Growth & Market Share

  • Market Protection: Assist in developing proactive action plans to protect trade when competitors enter the New Brighton area.

  • Sales Targets: Achieve growth objectives across all categories and promote loyalty programs such as VIC and charge cards.

  • Advertising: Manage the efficient distribution of advertising materials to maximize local reach.

2. Financial & Asset Control

  • Accounting Excellence: Utilize your strong accounting skills to manage petty cash, daily banking, and the reconciliation of shorts and overs.

  • Debt Management: Oversee Debtors and RD cheques to maintain a healthy cash flow.

  • Stock Integrity: Lead the PIC process, manage wall-to-wall stock takes, and implement measures to reduce shrinkage and stock loss.

  • Fixed Assets: Ensure the maintenance and protection of racking, forklifts, IT equipment, and the store safe.

3. Human Resource Management & Leadership

  • Talent Development: Assist with recruitment, induction, and the implementation of training and succession planning.

  • Employee Relations: Foster open communication through CARE meetings and manage manpower in line with company benchmarks.

  • Leadership: Inspire the team by taking responsibility, showing appreciation for good performance, and stimulating input from all staff members.

4. Operational Standards & Safety

  • Compliance: Ensure the store adheres to the CB Way and internal audit benchmarks.

  • OHSA: Manage Health and Safety aspects, including the appointment of Safety Reps and incident reporting.

  • Merchandising: Maintain impeccable housekeeping and merchandising standards according to official planograms.


Minimum Requirements & Qualifications

To be considered for this professional management training role in New Brighton, candidates must meet the following:

  • Education: Grade 12 (Matric) is essential.

  • Experience: At least 2 (two) years of retail management experience in a supervisory or leadership capacity.

  • Accounting Skills: Must possess strong numerical and accounting skills for financial reporting.

  • License & Mobility: Must have a valid Driver’s License, own reliable transport, and a cell phone.

  • Citizenship: Valid South African ID or a valid local work permit.

  • IT Literacy: Basic computer literacy is required for administrative and reporting tasks.

  • Knowledge: Sound knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA).
