Role Purpose

The Workshop Foreman is responsible for the end-to-end management of the automotive repair and maintenance facility. You will oversee a team of mechanics, manage high-value equipment, and ensure that the fleet’s technical availability meets the rigorous demands of the security industry. This role requires a blend of mechanical expertise, administrative precision (SAP/AP reporting), and strategic cost management to ensure the Durban region’s fleet portrays the professional Fidelity Security Services (FSS) image at all times.

Key Performance Areas & Responsibilities

1. Repair and Maintenance Oversight

  • Technical Assessments: Assess the nature of repairs required, compare quotations from service providers, and perform hands-on scrutiny of mechanics’ work.

  • Quality Control: Test vehicles personally, sign off on job cards, and conduct final assessments of completed work to ensure safety and performance.

  • Reporting: Ensure all fuel transactions are captured in the FGT6 (SAP) report and all repairs are documented in the FGT8 (AP) system.

2. Fleet Compliance and Inspections

  • Weekly Audits: Conduct vehicle inspections alongside the Regional Fleet Manager, completing official checking lists for spare wheels, jacks, triangles, and wheel spanners.

  • Legal Compliance: Ensure all vehicles possess valid license discs, roadworthy certificates, and Certificates of Fitness (COF) where required.

  • Asset Image: Maintain the aesthetic standards of the fleet, ensuring all fleet numbers are clearly visible and vehicles represent the FSS brand properly.

3. Staff Management and Workshop Operations

  • Leadership: Plan workshop rosters, manage mechanics, and provide technical training to staff to enhance department skills.

  • Financial Management: Negotiate better pricing with approved suppliers and submit innovative proposals on how to reduce overall maintenance costs.

  • Safety & Maintenance: Ensure the workshop remains neat and tidy, managing the maintenance and replacement of specialized workshop equipment.

Minimum Requirements & Qualifications

To be considered for this Mid-Senior leadership role, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Education: Matric/Grade 12 Certificate plus a qualification in Mechanical Engineering or as a Petrol and Diesel Mechanic (N6).

  • Experience: At least 5 years’ experience managing a large-scale mechanical automotive workshop.

  • Management: Proven experience in staff management, stock control, and equipment procurement.

  • Licensing: Valid Driver’s License with own reliable transport.

  • Integrity: Completely clear criminal record and no pending cases.

  • Quality Standards: Working knowledge of ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management requirements.
